My fiancé is having difficulty getting his insurance company to cover Pentasa. He has been a pentasa for a couple of years but it's a new insurance company and they suck. They want him to try all the medications they cover before they give him Pentasa. So, his choices are Humira or sulfasalazine. If his doctor says it's ok and his insurance company agrees then that's what he will try first. Has anyone every taken it? Opinion?

What? Those are two VERY different classes/types of medications.....with two VERY different price tags....

I took sulfasalazine (Azulfadine) many, many years ago...in fact I think that was the first one I was on 30+ years ago when my diagnosis was originally Ulcerative Colitis.

Does your fiance have UC or Crohns?

I was also on Sulfasalazine as my first med when I was diagnosed with just "indeterminate colitis." Once diagnosed with Crohn's, my current GI told me Sulfasalazine was useless for Crohn's in the small intestine and discontinued it.
