Feel mean this morning, sent Joseph off to school with a sore mouth and sore tummy. As he went off to get the bus he plodded down the road. He does seem to 'cope' when he is at school and it acts as a distraction but I hate the fact that I can't do anything to make it all better.

He had urine and blood tests on Monday and have to phone our pediatrician tomorrow to discuss results. He's getting a lot of left hand tummy pain so I think she wanted to check his kidney out, not sure if this is anything todo with Crohn's? He also still has very irregular BM and at least one ulcer but back of throat very bumpy and red!

Wish this pain could be taken away from all these children. X

:ghug:Oh so many hugs coming your way.:ghug:
What a horrible spot to be in.
We've all been there and will be there again.
You need to do what's best for him and sometimes that just feels rotten.
Your a great mom and you will continue to be.
Hang in there mom!

Hugs from me also. I have to say I've sent both of my kids off to school when they were not feeling up to snuff and have had very few calls to come get them. I think sometimes the distraction of school/friends help.

I agree with you, it is horrible watching them suffer and then having to make them go to school, etc while still in pain. I felt like that yesterday when I made Andrew go to school with a bad pain in his upper back (had to put his socks on for him). I just feel like he misses so much school with the "Crohns stuff" that I can't afford for him to miss school for "normal stuff". Feel like a mean mom!

Hugs...
Feel the same way.
Kid felt bad but with naps at school could at least get in an hour here or there not the best but better than nothing.
It does get better once you find the right drug just keep telling yourself that.
One day you will be able to update how great he is doing .
Until then take it one day at a time.
Did the doc say when he should be feeling better by?
I am not familiar with the med you have listed .
Is it similar to 6-mp or methotrexate?

Almost every day I have to send my kid knowing she hasn't slept well the night before, will have painful tummy cramp,s making it hard to move let alone concentrate, will have just a few bites to eat during snack and lunch. I let her have Tuesday morning off and she was able to cope going in for the afternoon, and quite often she is able to come home for lunch, which helps her make it through. Knowing she will have to catch up on school work missed is also her incentive.

Been there! I always feel so mean for making him go to school. I think so much about the days he was there, didn't feel good, didn't do as well on school work as he could have...Not to mention having blood drawn, colonoscopy prep...there are so many things we have to do "for their good". They endure so much more than anybody understands.

Hugs to you. It's a tough part of this disease!

Oh goodness ~ I feel for you hun!

We have been there so many time :shifty:
Unfortunately, as parents, we do what we feel is best for them.

They will thank us for it one day right ?? :)

:heart::heart::heart:

Well bloods come back normal which I know is good but at the same time know that he isn't 'him' at the moment. However just had a date come through for an MRI which he hasn't had before so I'm hoping this will give us a clearer picture of what is goin on.

Thanks for all your support.

Ps. Is it common to have itchy skin with Crohn's? Poor lad is itchy all over!

I got crohn as a kid when I had no one, dad died really early and my mom and me didn't get along. So, just being there is helping I believe, people around you helps. I never felt "alone" even though I had no one around me, but when I got sick I felt really really alone, depressed, just being there helps, lots, they help carry your weight and help you through things, people who help us like you help your children, they don't realise how much it means to the person.

Hi Ands,

Sometimes itchy skin may be related to liver issues - do you know if his liver enzymes have been elevated?

:ghug:

Hey Ands...

It surely is awful and heartbreaking to have to send your child off to school knowing they are not at their best. We hope and wish for normality for them and I do believe that school and friends can and does much of the time provide that for them both as a distraction and just to hang out with their friends. I did set guidelines for my two as to when they needed to head to the office and get them to ring me. it was comforting for me, and I believe them, to know that should things become too much they knew they could come home. Doing this also gave them a level of control and I do think they probably persevered a little more knowing that there was light at the end of the tunnel if it was needed.

As Tess has said, the first thing that pops into my mind with itchy skin and no obvious cause is the liver. Did they run Liver Function Tests with the latest round of bloods?

Any allergies or is it winter where you live??
Ibd kids tend to dehydrate faster so cold air = dry skin= itchy.
DS is always itchy but we have too many allergies to blame.
Have you tried cerave cream ?? Or vanicream
It works miracles on dry sensitive skin.

Oooooo good point mlp about the weather. Winter and the heating is a bugger for dry skin.

Dusty. :)

I have the most itchest scratchest family on the planet ..
If you can be allergic to it they are ( FA/EA/SA/Bugs/drugs)
So we have had more than our fair share of "mom I am itchy "
:lol

If the creme doesn't work by itself try wet wrapping it seals in the moisture .

Hey Ands,
We all know how you feel about the school thing. That is why this year I finally gave in and am allowing Caitlyn to home school. Before though I always listened to her and if she really felt she couldn't go I let her stay home. I think these kids are usually pretty good about not taking advantage. Her Grandparents were always pushing me to force her to go to school but I just felt if she is so sick what is she going to lean anyway? A couple of things we did though. We set up with her school to Skype so she could listen in on classes from home. We also had a psychologist who specializes in IBD speak with them and tell them what to expect and how to help her make up the work when she does miss. She did miss a lot of school but she graduated on time last year. The school really worked with us. Have you sat down and talked with them about his illness and issues?
One of the recommendations the psychologist made was for the teachers to concentrate on giving Caitlyn the " meat" and not the " potatoes" meaning give her the important work and not the busy work. This was very helpful. She also had an IEP which is an individualized education plan I don't know what the equivalent is in the UK.

it's like I wrote this. Im sorry you are going through this. My son was just diagnosed and I feel the exact same way. He missed a month of school and is now back. He deals with it but I know he is in pain the whole time he is there. His grades even dropped. I hate not being able to help him.

It's an awful feeling, isn't it? I have even had the school nurse talk her into staying at school when she wanted to come home early (she ended up being fine but I felt SO bad...) Here's hoping for a cure!
