I have ulcerative colitus I got it when I was 21 I am now 50- I just found the specific carb diet and have been on it for 2 weeks tonight. I have not cheated-I am so much better it is amazing- I dont want to be gross but no more fear of gas-no bloating at all- no more gurgling in my rectum-no more mucus-no more cramping and every day there has been less blood and today none!! It is not an easy diet to follow- but I have been cooking food and making enough for left overs and the desserts are really easy to whip up and you can eat so much of it and not get fat! I take one day at a time and hope that i can make it through the 1-2 year protocol. But it sure beats the way i was feeling-i highly recommend checking it out-there is nothing that can hurt you on it. It is much stricter than the celiac diet- which is basically how i ate before but with no results. why drs dont recommend it makes me extrememly angry- why would they if you get better no more tests - no more meds- no more office visits- and why is there no so called scientific data to back it up? well who is going to pay for a study that noone can make any money off of after!! please check it out- i bought the book breaking the vicious cycle and it is hard no chocolate at all- but if you follow it for the recommended time and slowly bring the foods back you should be able to eat normal again- and know which foods so avoid. AMAZING!!

Hi Sara - yes - most of us that have been on the forum any length of time are very familiar with this diet. You can use the search function up top there and do a search and should find some threads regarding it. Glad to hear that it seems to be working for you - keep up the good work!

It used to be a way to try and mitigate the affects of IBD in people back in the 20's. Anything that gets people to pay attention to what they eat has to be a good thing and I don't think there is anyone here who does not realize the quality of what goes into our gut affects what goes on in there. But in many places in the world the medical profession is not a capital business and doctors still do not recommend it. My doctor feels they have come a long way since the 20's and 30's and does encourage me to eat a healthy and well balanced diet.

on it for 8 weeks and feel great.. I can't wait to get off these horrible drugs.. stay on it man, you'll feel great.. I too, like you, found it after 10 years of dealing with these insane doctors.. and finally when they wanted to cut out my colon, god put this book in my way, and I'm not looking back.. It's funny what you will do when you're faced with someone cutting out your colon, doesn't seem that hard anymore.

I am glad you are having some relief by sticking to the diet. I am always amazed when people can follow the diet long term. Kudos to you.

I'm on the SCD diet too but I get most of my caloric intake from meat now because cooking is such a pain. I also didn't follow it exactly at the start. (cooking the fruit that I ate) because it's hard to follow it exactly. But I haven't eaten anything that isn't legal since the end of November. I really need to get back to making SCD yogurt. I think the acid helps. Plus it tastes really good and offers something to mix fruit, nuts and honey into. Apples, oranges, monterey mushrooms, bananas, nuts, hamburger, eggs, cod, broccoli and carrots. That's basically my diet now. Oh and Colby cheese which I eat too much of. The part I like the most is actually knowing what I can and can't eat.

My case wasn't as serious as yours so it's hard for me to be sure it's working. But I haven't had blood for 3 months and I did in November so it's probably doing something. I'll know more after my doctors appointment next month. I've been having blood tests.

meds:
Asacol 1200mg 3 times daily
Azathioprine 50mg once daily

I'm thinking about starting the diet myself, but I'm apprehensive about my ability to stay balanced on it. Would anyone recommend working with a nutritionist to set up a specific meal plan to get me started?

AGB621, I was going to a nutritionist and she was bang on with the Crohns and digestive diseases, she knew more than the Gi's did. See a nutritionist that specializes in digestive disorders, they can be a big help. I had been feeling better and better portion control. Good luck, let us know how you do!

Carbohydrates are an important part of any healthy diet. Eaten regularly, carbs do not lead to weight gain, unless they are eaten to excess. After all, eating too much of anything and not burning it off through physical activity will lead to weight gain. That said, weight for weight, carbs provide fewer calories than fat or alcohol. It's also what you add to the carbohydrates that bump up the calories. For example, the margarine or butter we put on the bread and the cream or cheese sauces we add to pasta. So if you need to lose weight, cut down on these added fats, not the carbs.

hey seeksara

hi,

my name is rissa. i'm 38 and was diagnosed with UC about 8 years ago. it was mostly manageable until about 4 months ago. then i started getting cramps along with worsening of my normal symptoms. i was going crazy trying to find some kind of diet adjustment that would work to avoid medications. so i started the SCD diet about a week and a half ago and am really happy so far. i was just wondering how the scd is going for you. are you still doing it?? is it still great??

for the most part i've been really amazed at the improvement. cramping after eating is what was really getting to me and that is completely gone unless i eat something weird that i'm not supposed to. the bleeding seemed to get better right away but then came back again--not as bad as before but i was a little dissappointed about it.

would love to hear how it's going for you, favorite foods, etc. i really love how laid back and friendly this site is. i noticed people could be a little fanatical and militant on SCD specific sites. i definitely don't blame them, i'm just not to that point yet. :)

so far my favorite foods are bananas, eggs, bacon, yogurt, homemade apple-rhubarb sauce, almond flour muffins (although i have to admit these are getting a little old day after day!!) and cabbage soup.

take care!!
