Haven't been diagnosed, but what if I do have it?

Hey all, been a lurker for a while, first time posting.
My problems started this past fall. I woke up one day with horrible pains and because I needed to go to the doctor for a new inhaler, I decided to tell her about it. She waited a few days and when it didn't go away I had a CT scan and my intestines were slightly inflamed. They gave me a steroid and I thought nothing of it until a few weeks later it came back, but in a different place at the very bottom of my torso where I used to get period cramps before I got on birth control. I didn't know what to do, so I went back to the doc and she mentioned the word Crohns in passing.
She referred me to a GI doctor who was really rude and labeled me with IBS without even examining me or listening to my symptoms. I didn't follow up with him.
A few months later I had the pains again and she referred a different GI doc who had a two month waiting list. I only just saw him in the beginning of May and he immediately took concern that my grandmother has ulcerative colitis and scheduled a colonoscopy that I have June 10th.
Here's the thing though, I suffer from severe constipation with only the occasional day of diarrhea. I haven't lost any weight either. I've actually gained 5lbs recently and am overweight at 189lbs. I really don't think I fit the symptoms for Crohns, but I'm worried that if I do have it it may get worse over time. I don't know what's going on, but I just want the pain to stop.
It hurts right now as I write this. Any thoughts?

I think my main problem in life right now is being overweight. I'm on some heavy duty psychiatric meds for my BPD and BiPolar disorders and they caused me to gain 60lbs last year and make it almost impossible to lose weight. I'm always hungry, even when it hurts I constantly feel the need to eat. It sucks.

Hi! welcome to the forum!

You can certainly have Crohn's with constipation rather than the more typical diarrhoea. And you can have Crohn's without losing weight too. We have an overweight with Crohn's support group here http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=66407

Those things can make a doctor dismiss Crohn's but it would be wrong to and I'm glad your new GI is investigating. hopefully the colonoscopy will give you more answers and once you get a diagnosis and start treatment you will get some relief from the pain.

Hang in there! And let us know how you go!

A colonoscopy can diagnose (and rule out) many conditions besides Crohn's and UC, as can upper endoscopies and the imaging tests regularly used to look for Crohn's. As 24601 said, you can have constipation and be overweight yet still have Crohn's. There's also a constipation support group: http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=69200 Though it's not typical. But whatever is wrong, a colonoscopy is a good way of trying to find it.
