Anyone else out there having a difficult time in college? I was diagnosed 2 weeks before I went back in my sophomore year. I also dorm 1200 miles away from home. Its very stressful not being able to make it to class or missing class to make doctors appointments. How do you guys deal with going out? I drink a decent amount when i go out, i try to not go out as often but going to a party school its pretty difficult.

I got diagnosed this summer, I'm a junior in college. I am 2 hours from home and an hour from my doctor. My teachers are pretty nice about doctors appointments. I missed a week of class when I was in the hospital and I am just hoping that I don't end up back during a busy time with more homework. Some weekends I just don't drink, but when I do I have been getting sick at night but the next day I feel fine. I go to a D1 school and we also party. You just have to be responsible and know your limits.

Hai,

I am currently at University but I had to take a year of because of my health. I had a perforated bowel last year and because of that got a ostomy bag, but this really didn't help me very much I even am in more pain now than I was before I got the bag.

But for school I tried to make the best of it. So I made appointments with councillors in school to see if there where any possibilities in my schedule to maybe participate in half the classes I had or ask the teachers what classes where most important so that I could schedule around those.

For going out and stuff I would try and stick to 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks because one I never know how my medication will react to it and two I don't think I could handle my pain very well if I would drink more, but that's just me. I can have just as much fun if I drink alcohol or just soft drinks. Also keep in mind that a lot of alcohol isn't good for most people with Crohns, but that's for you to find out yourself off course!

Hope this helps you a bit, Good luck with your College!

xx Maud

I didn't drink in college--I can't drink during flares.

You could talk to the office of disabilities, they might be able to help. Also, open and honest communication with the professors help. If they know whats going on they may be able to help with accommodations.

Good luck with school!!
