I am 36 yrs old and have always eaten a healthy diet and exercised fairly regularly. I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist and a nursing student so I know how to stay healthy...or so I thought. My diagnosis came after I had been to the ER three times within a week. I had never had problems with my GI tract before this.
The first time I went in they gave my something for an upset stomach and sent me home with instructions of clear liquid diet. Two days later I went back and I was given Ciprofloxacin for a UTI which of course came from the 7 day severe diarrea everyone here knows about. The cipro brought out some rare side effects of crohn's. I had swelling of my knees and ankles, also large golf ball size bumps from the knees down...some were in the muscles others along the tibia (shin) bone. Another strange thing was I had pustules on my arms and legs. Any needle site, mosquito bite or cat scratch I had within a month, showed up as a red bump with a pustule on it. The scratches were long angry red bumps with a nice white line down them.
So third time in was a charm. I was admitted. I was extremely dehydrated even though I was forcing myself to drink water and gatorade at all times. I hadn't eaten in about a week except for bits and pieces here and there. Of course the family had been watching me waste away each day.
The hospital stay-
Basically, I was told that if I hadn't came in that day I would have had kidney failure...6 bags of fluid later I could at least get out of bed to use the restroom...yay! So everyone was telling me how easy it is to get a colonoscopy...I screamed till they gave me another shot of painkillers. 7 days later...Crohn's it is!
So now I'm back to working out but getting my diet straight is another story. Trying to figure out what my "triggers" are is exhausting. Not to mention I am now allergic to things I have used for years. Found out I'm allergic to my face wash....yeah, that went well, face was red and swollen for a week and of course I can't take allergy meds because of anti inflammatories are bad.
I'm thinking about walking a half marathon for Team Challenge but just want to get some advice on if it would be too much. But I guess that would all depend on if I can keep the "triggers" away.
