I am 36 yrs old and have always eaten a healthy diet and exercised fairly regularly. I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist and a nursing student so I know how to stay healthy...or so I thought. My diagnosis came after I had been to the ER three times within a week. I had never had problems with my GI tract before this.

The first time I went in they gave my something for an upset stomach and sent me home with instructions of clear liquid diet. Two days later I went back and I was given Ciprofloxacin for a UTI which of course came from the 7 day severe diarrea everyone here knows about. The cipro brought out some rare side effects of crohn's. I had swelling of my knees and ankles, also large golf ball size bumps from the knees down...some were in the muscles others along the tibia (shin) bone. Another strange thing was I had pustules on my arms and legs. Any needle site, mosquito bite or cat scratch I had within a month, showed up as a red bump with a pustule on it. The scratches were long angry red bumps with a nice white line down them.

So third time in was a charm. I was admitted. I was extremely dehydrated even though I was forcing myself to drink water and gatorade at all times. I hadn't eaten in about a week except for bits and pieces here and there. Of course the family had been watching me waste away each day.

The hospital stay-
Basically, I was told that if I hadn't came in that day I would have had kidney failure...6 bags of fluid later I could at least get out of bed to use the restroom...yay! So everyone was telling me how easy it is to get a colonoscopy...I screamed till they gave me another shot of painkillers. 7 days later...Crohn's it is!

So now I'm back to working out but getting my diet straight is another story. Trying to figure out what my "triggers" are is exhausting. Not to mention I am now allergic to things I have used for years. Found out I'm allergic to my face wash....yeah, that went well, face was red and swollen for a week and of course I can't take allergy meds because of anti inflammatories are bad.

I'm thinking about walking a half marathon for Team Challenge but just want to get some advice on if it would be too much. But I guess that would all depend on if I can keep the "triggers" away.

sorry to hear of your dx. Crohns is horrible. husband has had it for 35 years. for him he can only eat chicken (not fried) eggs potatoes (mashed) best, dry toast to absorb acids, he stays away from dairy. good luck on finding what works for you, he use to eat yogurt. love & peace

Thank you! I am dealing well with it now I think. I did go through a bit of a depression but I think that was mostly due to losing my father at the end of Sept and my step father in the beginning of Dec. My dx came in between them. Going through all of that within a few months kind of changes a person's perspective.

I was admitted to the VA hospital here and was reassured that is the place I want to work when I get out of nursing school. Everyone there was phenominal. And I am very positive my chiropractor/nutritionalist will help me figure out what my triggers are.

I found baby stuff ok with my skin (baby oil, non bio washner etc)
Food is a very weird thing as ppl react differently, although it seems corn is out for most people (think normal good foods are good as they are hard to digest... they arent so good for us)
Wholemeal iss a killer for me (celery, kiwi fruit etc) u get the point. Have a try see hoew it goes and hopefully you will find a median

This forum is amazing with so much help. Im sure you will get comfort in it, but ask any questions you want (no question is stupid) and hope it will help

This is amazing. I found this at about 10pm and it's now close to 1 am. Nice to read other's stories to get information. I hadn't thought about corn being bad. I really haven't reasearched this disease...denial I guess? I think wheat is bad for me so I went off it yesterday. I went shopping for wheat and gluten free so we'll see how that works out.

I find wholewheat bad, (nuts and seeds etc) White bread is ok i guess but i dont eat a lot (a loaf every 6mnths...just cos i dont dind it that tasty)
A lot of sugar can be good (so watch the fruit intake) but ppl find veg juice to be good

Also dont believe what i say say just listen to the majority :)

Hello, just wanted to say welcome to the forum. I am sorry about the diagnosis but you have found the right place for the advice and support you need :) Food is such a big pain in the butt (pun intended) with this disease, everyone reacts differently to things and stuff that should be really good for you end up putting you on the loo for the rest of the night :( Along with looking at your diet what other treatment are you currently on?
