Anyone else get these? I started getting more of them when they put me on Pred, but they haven't gone away since getting off Pred.

I understand they aren't dangerous, but dang they are scary from time to time. :depressed:

Hi, Kittee. I have arrhythmia. Normally, it's just annoying, but one time, I had a run of V-tach on the monitor, that could be BAD, but, after a lot of testing, obviously, I'm still here. :D

My cardiologist told me that eventually I'll need to be on beta blockers, but so far I've managed to just deal with it.

For the record, things like caffeine and sudafed can make it feel worse.

I was put on Metoprolol for a bit because of a rapid pulse that had me feel weak and faint (feel faint, I didnt' "faint") for a couple months while on pred. I'm perfectly fine now, I stopped the med around the time I stopped pred. It seemed to work, they even had to do an EKG because I told them I was freaked about it, I was at about 2 beats/second. I sometimes get the impression my heart beats slow for a few beats, then faster for like 10 seconds, etc...but my mom told me it's only a concern if I feel pain or get weak or pass out, and that I'm paranoid. I think she's out to get me.

Ah good to know I am not alone. Usually mine is just a quick few extra beats that only last 1-3 seconds. Just leaves me shaken and nervous. Maybe 2-4 times per week, that I"m aware of.

I've had palpitations off and on for years. Had it checked out by my doc and told it was a benign condition. After I was diagnosed with Crohn's and put on pred last year, they did seem to worsen and got better when I went off the pred. However, until I saw this thread I didn't realize that I haven't had any palpitations now for several months even though I've been back on pred since July 2. The only thing I can contribute this to is practically giving up soda (used to average about 1Diet Coke a day, and now it's about 1 a month). Of course, my stomach feels better without the Diet Coke, too.

Heart palps here too. Sometimes it feels like the blood gets stuck, can't move for a second, there's no heartbeat, then it gushes through and beats extra fast for a few beats. Of course it NEVER happens when I'm hooked up to the EEG thingy or whatever it is.
Every time I go to a doctor they say "I want to know why your heart r ate is so high..." and that's the last thing they do about it.
I've also had them when I was hyperthyroid, on beta blockers twice, but that "magically" went away.

I've been hyper and hypo thyroid before. They will put me on synthroid for a few months and then mine magically goes away too... lol

Last year, when I was flaring really badly, about once a week, I would get what I assumed were palpitations. For about 20 seconds, I would feel really dizzy and my heartbeat was irregular (a bunch of really quick beats and then no beats for a few seconds). I also hadn't really worked out in about 5 years at the time.

The past six months, I've been lifting and running about 3 miles/day. Since I've gotten into better shape, the heart thing hasn't happened to me at all. My resting heart rate is also 10-15 beats/minute lower than it used to be.

I never spoke to my dr about it, so I'm not really sure what it was or what was causing it, but regular exercise has definitely helped, maybe even eliminated it.

There are many possible causes for an irregular heart beat. One that you can address is a low Magnesium level.

While this may not be the cause, most people with Crohn's have a harder time absorbing Calcium than normal people. Magnesium and vitamin D is needed to absorb Calcium so maybe you could help all of these problems with one supplement. It really is not going to hurt you in any case.

Warning. If you take huge doses of Mg it can cause loose stool. Probably want to avoid that scenario.

Now that you mention it, I get those with Pred.
I've never really thought about it though.

I can't say it ever worried me though.

yeah stress hormones tend to cause palpitations in tons of people. i've read quite a few people who get these when they get adrenaline rushes and being on prednisone will screw up your adrenal secretions. even being off of it for a while it will take your body some getting used to.. you could have a little bit of adrenal fatigue and that could be a cause as well but is easily fixed with a few things if you can handle them in your diet.

also i've read tons of people have palpitations when eating or drinking anything with caffeine (chocolate included), alcohol, and nicotine. i know i certainly do after drinking even the smallest amount of tea or even eating something like a frickin brownie. :runaway: if they get bad ask about a beta blocker which 95% of the time will correct the problem and you can get off of them in about 4-5 weeks and should be good to go.
