Just curious....after hearing heartburn mentioned on here...
Is there a correlation between Crohn's and heartburn? I have Crohn's and had a foot of my large intestine removed back in '02. I have struggled with heartburn for many years and wonder if they are connected? I never had a doctor mention that they were related but I guess it would make sense.

Thanks for any replies I may get,
Mike

Mike, i've wondered about this too.. originally my Crohns was in my large intestine only - yet (before surgery) i suffered with awful indigestion/heartburn symptoms, increasing in severity over time. in fact i was on anti-ulcer treatments at one point. these days i would say i am now prone to heartburn if i eat the wrong things, or neglect my diet (not eating regularly, too much coffee etc) - also prone to oesophaghitis, which i feel is linked to the heartburn issue.

I was put on omeprazole pretty much as soon as I was diagnosed 8 years ago. If I stop taking it I get bad heartburn

I have had very bad heartburn for a long time now. I started taking prilosec before it was OTC. My original GI said it was from a hiatal hernia, which it certainly could be I suppose.

I started getting bad heartburn after my first prednisolone treatment. It didn't stop when the pred did. I've been on Omeprazole since. It works well.

Yes, as if crapping weren't enough. Many of us get incredibly fun heartburn daily. I can't live without my Nexium. Which reminds me....I forgot to take it. No wonder the burn is more painful than usual.

I am also on Nexium...and the irony of it all, I did not have a Hiatus Hernia or Esophageal Candidiasis until after I starting feeling the effects of an IBD

Prednisone gave me terrible heartburn. I took a medicine call Pariet similar to Nexium and it helped a lot. Maybe you should test also for the ulcer bacteria Helicobacter Pylori bacterium; it's a simple blood test and if you have it, tou can take some antibiotics taht get rid of it and maybe help with the heartburn.

Some studies even link this bacteria with Crohn's; but I did the blood test and was negative for it!

My reflux and burning stomach problems were worse than my Crohn's symptoms.

I had three tests, one was a biopsy for H-Pylori. They all came back negative. Finally I treated myself for H-Pylori infection using an alternative treatment which immediately rid me of all of the burning and reflux. I have not used an antacid since that time. That was almost two years ago.

The tests they give you are only accurate if you have a certain amount of the bacteria. If you have a low level of the bacteria it will not show up. Like many other lab tests, they can only prove you have the infection, not that you do not.

There can be other causes for these stomach disorders also. I just got real lucky.

Dan

Yea I have this to and take a very strong dose of Ramtide (zantac). It helps but I deal with heartburn/nausea everyday. Ask your doc.

This reminds me, I have a question regarding heartburn related to Crohns - does anyone know if it is possible that the sensation of heartburn is nausea rather than a burning / pain? I am really trying to think outside the box for myself, which even for me is hard sometimes.
