heating pad

Has anyone discussed whether a heating pad is safe for pain with their GI? I know a lot of you use it, but it kinda freaks me out, is applying heat to an inflamed area good or could it make things worse? Maybe it relieves pain but if it makes the problem worse long term thats no good.

Also, what companies/brands would you recommend? There are so many options and I want something that fits nicely on my belly not those weird shaped ones for the neck and elbow etc lol

Hi Noguts,

I also wondered about that. I get a little bit of pain on my right hip/lower back. Not sure if that is from inflammation or scar tissue or what but i also thought that while heat feels good on it that it could make inflammation worse as inflammation is heat isn't it?

That's my question exactly, and my GI never directly told me to get a heating pad, so I kind of want to ask him before I go ahead and do it.

I told my GI that I use hot water bottles, wheat bags & hot baths to kill the pain & he didn't voice any concerns. I think heat helps because it's just overpowering one stimulus with another. Or something. In my humble opinion, I feel that if you're getting some relief from heat pads (or similar) then you should keep on getting that relief.

I don't think heating pads/water bottles are harmful. The only risk would be if they burned you from being too hot. I have one that came from Walgreen's.

I use a heating pad and ice often. I can't take Tylenol often (it causes me to be anemic due to being G6PD deficient) or NSAIDS so I am limited in getting pain relief and these do help. Ice numbs and takes down swelling while the heating pad increases blood flow to the area. This regiment was suggested by my Rhuematologist (sp?) for minor pain of my joints. Altering them does help.

ok well i have my trusty heating pad i used almost all day when im in pain and not doing anything i even have it on high settings and it does wonders to ease the pain(mind you when its not too bad to begin with) and it has never caused me a problem, my mom is the one who told me to try it. i put it on my lower back tho not the front, it feels better that way to me, but you can put them wherever! or i will sometimes put a pillow on my tummy and hug it to add pressure and that will help sometimes to. well hope u feel better soon, i dun no if this helped or not lol ^-^

seeker its so true that my natural instinct is to rub my belly and get the heat from my hands and so that really makes sense.

I don't think the heating clay i got does too much, but it is some nice soothing as opposed to just having sharp pain or cramping. I think it just kind of distracts me because it takes the focus off of the pain.

I actually got burns the other day from my clay heating pad! I guess the clay part touched my belly and wasn't properly covered with the cloth. It wasn't too bad, a mild sunburn for the day lol.

I have been burned from my heating pad recently. It caused a 2nd degree burn so I am banned for now. But I love my heating pad but my Doc says its ok but just get the one that cuts off automatically after 2 hrs.

Seeker, those are some really useful ideas. I can imagine the ice and heat alternated would be quite soothing and relaxing. At the moment for my pain I am on the Fentanyl patch. I don't really want to take Fentanyl tablets aswell although I have been prescribed them. I'd rather look for more natural relief!

I usually love my heat pads, I have always been advised they are a good idea by health professionals I've seen and spoken to! I use ones that you can heat in the microwave mainly, at night in particular it helps me sleep on top of all the medication, plus they warm the bed. For daytime use, if I am out, I found these things called Cura-Heat. They are air-activated and you stick them onto the inside of your clothes.

Docs tell me to do whatever makes me feel better including a heating pad i found that vibrates as well as heats. For me, its a great complement to pain treatment with narcotics. Hope that helps :)

Use a heating pad every night first on high and then turn it down to low, been doing it for years, and I am just fine.

bella the vibrating sounds nice, i always like to gently massage my lower belly so it would be nice if the pad did it for me

i couldn't live without my heating pad. HEAT Brings Blood to certain areas which allow healing and other White and red cells to that area. There isn't anythin negative that I see. (Burns and or obvious situations are obvious)

When I had major flare ups, I'd drink hot tea, and use a heating pad on my stomach, it always would work.

I found the same. Also was told many years ago to make your meds work better, have a warm bath, helps to circulate through your whole body.

haha what a gross picture, drinking liquid brown stuff, while making liquid brown stuff. yeah im gonna pass on that too haha shantel you are a riot!

Just picked up a heating pad the other day have yet to use it maybe tomorrow. That hot coco from Hershey looks good... Recently I have gotten hot choc form dunkin donuts and I cant tell if that upset me or it was the food I got from them but it tasted good going down so I'm willing to try it again.:ybatty:
