My name is Kaitlyn and I'm eighteen years old.
I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease one week ago.
I went to the doctor for abdominal pain, thinking it was my appendix.
The doctors also thought it was my appendix but I had a CT Scan and it came back showing I had Crohn's.
My only experience and prior knowledge of Crohn's was my cousin's husband who was basically on his death bed. However, he also had cancer twice and his immune system was shot.
For this past week, I've been just trying to adjust to this new information and the diet.
I guess a common thread in Crohn's is no longer eating wheat or gluten?
Good news though, the doctors think my case is mild.
I am going to a GI specialist in October so I'll find out then.
Thanks, everyone.

Welcome to the forum Kaitlyn!

I am sorry to hear you were recently diagnosed, however it is good to hear that it is likely a mild case. Hopefully you are not too overwhelmed with the diagnosis and all the information you probably have read about the disease. Just because other people have a certain experience does not mean you will also.

Please read up on past threads and let us know if you have any questions!

Hi and welcome. Glad they caught it early. Post back and let us know what they say at your October appointment.
I don't find myself having to avoid wheat. Diet seems to effect everyone differently, just like the medications do. I've been trying to avoid fruit skins, seeds, whole grains, gassy veggies, and spicy foods. I especially avoid onions and popcorn, that seems to do a lot of damage on the way through.
Good luck.

Welcome! Food seems to really be different for everyone. I can't eat beef, salad only occasionally, no greasy/fried foods, nothing really spicy, no high fiber foods. I tend to eat a lot of pasta, potatoes (not fried and no skin), really well cooked veggies, fish, chicken, and rice. The diet isn't so bad once you find out what hurts you and what doesn't bother you. I hope your case really is mild. Mine seems to be also, though the first round of meds didn't work for me. I think as far as that goes you have to find what works best with your body-like the food. Great that you seem to have had a quick diagnosis.

I am currently on ciprofloxacin and metronidazole.
My doctor just put me on those for the time being.
I guess the GI specialist will decide.

My mom told me a gluten/wheat free diet is a common thread in crohn's but I just want to talk to the specialist and a nutritionist because that is what I am having some serious issues dealing with.

I am already a vegetarian and have been one for four years so eliminating wheat/gluten out of my diet has been a serious task.

So I am just kind of lost in the whole thing.

and thank everyone for your welcome notes!

Hi Kaitlyn!

I was diagnosed in September too. My case is also mild. Are you on a specific diet?

Well I haven't seen a specialist yet so I dont really know what not to eat.
But I was told a wheat/gluten free diet wouldn't hurt so that's whats i'm doing.
Also I have to stay away from small seeds because they could get trapped in the sores in my intestines.
I just want to talk to a speicalist because I am so frusterated.

:welcome:

I've learned that you add one thing at a time to your diet for a few days and if it makes you sick avoid it for awhile. It takes a long time to do, but it saves on your gut :)

One thing my specialist told me was to take a bite of my favorite foods evey now & then, that way I don't go nuts over the cravings...lol
