I've had stomach issues for 8 years but was diagnosed with crohn's disease 18 months ago. I am taking aziathioprine but am still suffering with stomach cramps, fever and tiredness! Thought I'd join to talk to others in the same situation as me. I am hoping everyone is in a good state and feeling positive :) xx

:welcome: Jenny. Glad you joined our community, with great support and experiences from the others. Sometimes some meds either are not strong enough or you are experiencing stronger symptoms the medcation can fix. You should go back to your GI and tell him/her that you are getting worse or still suffering.

Hope to see you around the forum!

Hi there, Jenny! How long have you been on Azathioprine? Have you had any recent testing to see if the medication is doing the job?

I wish I had some more advice to offer, but I don't have any experience with Aza. I highly suggest checking out the Imuran/Azathioprine forum. I am sure it will be helpful.

Hello I've been on azathioprine for about 9 months. I got very upset yesterday and so I called my IBD nurse, luckily she is very helpful and I've booked to see her this Friday:) my stomach cramps have been really bad so I've not eaten much, buscopan appears to be taking the edge off. Just so tired and feeling rough. It's so nice to be able to talk to people who understand. Thanks so much x

I am glad you are seeing your IBD nurse this week.

Let us know how it goes!

Hi Jenny and welcome :)

That you're feeling so tired the first thing that comes to mind is vitamin B12 levels as people with Crohn's are often deficient and that can cause fatigue. Have they tested your B12 levels? If not, I'd suggest asking them to do so on Friday (and any other vitamin and mineral levels they're willing to check).

Good luck to you and please keep us updated!

Welcome Jenny,

Glad you have found this forum. It has loads of interesting stuff if you take the time to browse through it.
I was put on aziathioprene inbetween prednisilone and asacol which I have been on for years now although my IBD nurse has increased my dose and thinks I maybe should be on something stronger as I've been having a few minor flares recently. I think I have maybe just got acustom to the bloatedness and cramps but maybe I shouldnt.
I have recently changed my diet and trialing some suggestions found in the diet and exercise section. Must say I have never had fever due to crohns - goes to show we are all different although I do recall I had some unwanted side affects on azath, worth checking the leaflet - it's been so long since I was on them I have forgotten. Oh and the link to the section on the forum (one section I haven't viewed yet)

Tiredness is unfortunately part and parcel of IBD. As one of my first consultants use to say - do all the activities you want and enjoy when you can but if feeling drained maybe your body is telling you it needs to rest!

With proper follow up GI consultations and following a good diet plan that works for you and ensuring you get the required rest you should feel good/better but you know like us there is no guarantees with crohns.

I hope you find some of this useful. Think positive and take each day as it comes.

Take care

Hi guys as promised I've logged on to update you... Wow what a week but improving now :) I went to the nurse on friday morning. The nurse did some blood tests and my inflammatory markers are right up. I've not been on the right dose of azathioprine it needs increasing. To help settle the flare up I am back on the steroids! Had scream stress! Went back to the hospital Friday pm to collect the prescription, justvas the department closed. Got to the pharmacy but he refused to give me pills because of the content on the script. The script states 40mg per day (no details on how they should be taken) then it says after a week reduce by 5mg and then stop! Pharmacy said does not state how many he to provide so can't provide any. I called the hospital but they could only speak to the on call gastro dr, who refused to help saying we need to go back to the script writer! Which would be Monday as no mobile number listed for the nurse. An hour later crippled with pain exhausted I cry..... The pharmacist agreed to give me enough to last me until Monday when I can get back to the hospital for a replacement script! Well I've had a pyjama day with a hot water bottle 2 doses of the steroids and feel better already! I want to thank you. You've been someone to talk to who understands through a difficult week! I feel I have new friends xxx thanks again xx

Great to hear your feeling better. Some times it is just good to talk....Lord knows we all take enough medication to down an elephant.
This is a great resource.
Take care Jenny...:)

Good stuff glad you are feeling better. I hate prednisone but when you have suffered a long time and it seems to be the magical pill that works. Anytime you need us we are here!
