hello

Hi i'm new on this. Wanted some advice. I was diagnosed with crohns in 1997 after a series of flare ups. Been on asacol with seemingly excellent results (no flares), and after my last colonoscopy a few weeks ago, the dr told me the colon was clean (no inflamation), but there is moderate ileitus (terminal ileium). for that reason, I Was taken off asacol and now supposed to start on Mercaptopurine [Purinethol, 6-MP]. Anyone gone through this transfer? anyone have thoughts on 6-MP. I feel like leave well enough alone, and the side effects on the 6-mp are less then desirable, and the constant blood work to keep an eye on the liver etc sounds like a real drag. I've been in remission for 15 years; do i take my chances and not take anything? thoughts??
thanks!

Hello Nate and welcome to the forum :bigwave: I would advice against not being on any meds at all as this may lead to a full on flare up of the disease and more nastiness developing. You could perhaps have a look at our treatment forum for potential alternatives however they do all come with their own set of side effects....you can also get more info on the the Mercaptopurine: http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16.

Glad you have joined us and pls let us know on how you get on.

Hi Nate and welcome :) I'm really glad you joined.

I agree with Angrybird that it's not a good idea not to be on anything. Now, there are alternatives to 6mp with potentially less side effects (see our treatment section) but it's hard to know what is best for you. I'd suggest educating the heck out of yourself regarding this disease so you can make educated decisions and advocate for yourself. That way you work with your doctor rather than having to put complete trust in their decisions without any understanding of why and the potential ramifications.

We're here for you anytime bud :)

I agree, stay on the meds your dr recommends. You may not feel symptoms but, as I have learned the hard way, getting permanent damage.

As long as you believe in your Drs- follow their advise!
