I leave for surgery at 5am and surgery is at 8, they didn't call me in a prep to do...my question is do I have to get one of my own? I'm having my large colon removed and an ileostomy done. I've been going D since late last night and the more hunger pains I get the more I go. Have any of you had surgery like this without prep and been okay?

I can't recall if I just had to be on liquid diet or if I had to do a picosalax the night prior...
I've asked someone to jump in as he had the procedure done recently. Chances are he will remember. Just keep in mind that this procedure can be done in state of emergency (for which they can't prep) so, worse come to worse let them know about the situation.

Do you think you can call the surgery ward of your hospital and maybe talk to a nurse or someone out there that might be able to give you directives regarding the situation? That's what I would try and get a hold of some Go-Litely at the drugstore. I would believe it's likely that you need to clean to an extend but I can't recall if its more a cleaning like go-litely or picosalax.

Thank you, I just decided to not do any prep for the fact that I'm basically glued to the toilet. With mu Crohns, when I get really hungry and get hunger pains, it makes me go to the bathroom a lot more. I think ill be cleared out enough for morning. But like you said, they do it in emergency situations with no time for prep. I just want to eat, it makes me really emotional for some reason knowing I prob won't actually eat til later this week...I love food. Lol.

Oh... I would not eat though... nothing else than clear stuff and even. It's sure that there is a time from which you probably should not be eating, 12hours and up.

On my paper is says stop everything at 10. I can't take any meds or nothing. I'm getting sooo scared, idk. I guess I'm scared of life afterwards with my new friend, my stoma.

It's totally understandable. The night prior to surgery is always quite stressful. I generally can't sleep from it. I would say, it's always the fear of the unknown.

Stay positive and visualize a great and healthy recovery! Things can get much better with a stoma. It brought be access to pretty much a decade of health and worry free time when I got my first procedure done!

Can you call the on-call nurses? I didn't have any prep except liquids 2 days before and had no food or drink after midnight before.

Jane- I've been doing my research on people's stories with a stoma and I'd have to say that 95% of them feel a million times better and their life improved a lot. I'm trying to look at the long term outcome and not the short term. I can't wait to be able to do stuff with my son and not have to worry about a bathroom being close by.

Nogutsnoglory- I've been on clear liquids since midnight lastnite, then nothing after midnight tonight. I just hope its enough bc I really don't want to post pone it. And I called but can't get ahold of anyone.

I'm surprised they didn't give more guidance but that's what I did and it was fine. Our IBD bowels clean out pretty well on their own anyway. I think you will be empty by surgery. Don't stress yourself and best wishes for success and quick healing.

Thank you. Yeah I've only seen my surgeon once when she told me I needed this surgery. And that was over a month ago, I met with my stoma nurse last week, but other then that...nothing. They sent me papers/instructions on what to do the night/day before and day of. Your right, I've barely had any guidance thru this and that's what makes me so nervous. I've done as much research as I possibly can, but I hope she knows I'm gonna have a bunch of questions for her in the morning.

I hope your surgery was successful and that it wasn't too hard on you. Do let us know how you are doing once you log in and feel well enough to do some typing.
