I was in the hospital this week for a fistula related pain and was given dilaudid (sp?). I was also told I have an ileus. I hadn't passed any stool until the last day I was in the hospital because of an enema. Since I have been out I still haven't been able to pass anything. I have tried all of my tricks to help myself go but nothing is working and I'm wondering if if anyone has suggestions on laxatives or if I should even try one.
I had 3 rounds of stool softeners in the hospital and a suppository before trying the enema. I am percolating but nothing is coming out. Please help me.

Dilaudid causes constipation, and so does a fistula if it's peri-anal pre-fistulotomy. You probably need to go to the hospital and get the fistula drained if you haven't already and get off of dilaudid, because this happened to me, too.

I only took the dilaudid in the hospital and have been off of it for 3 days. The fistula is okay, hospital released me because the stool was the only concern to let me out. The fistula isn't an abscess so I'm okay there. I called the emergency after hours for my GI so hopefully they will get back to me soon.

Thank you so much!

That's good about the fistula! I was worried that might be contributing. I would definitely blame the dilaudid for how you haven't been able to pass a BM. That's also great that you called your GI. I hope you hear back soon! :)

Heard back-
He says laxative is okay if I do Miralax. He says since I have a non abscessed fistula, laxatives are okay and we want it to push through instead of sitting in there. He said another suppository may be good and if in a couple of days nothing moves we will need to move to another enema... Yuck! Hopefully using the laxatives work. Wish me luck!

I use Miralax every other day, actually! It's nice because it's not a stimulant laxative, so no uncomfortable cramping. It might take a day to work because of that, though. Just a heads up!

Good luck!
