Today was my normal day to go to the lab for bloodwork because of the drugs I am on. This evening I received a call from my GI because it turns out that my hemoglobin is in the low 6's. I'm supposed to be going to the hospital tomorrow for a blood transfusion :(

I've been anemic for years and had a blood transfusion once, but that was during surgery. I've been having weird symptoms for a couple weeks now and just wonder if this is what the cause was.

Has anyone else here ever had low hemoglobin? If so, do you have any advice for me?

I'm surprised you're even still standing! The lowest my haemoglobin was 11, and I was so tired, dizzy, pins and needles etc. Do they know the cause of your anaemia?

Hi,

Mine was down to 7.2 3 years ago. That was one week after i had an iron infusion.
3 months later i underwent my second resection as the CD was so severe.

During the two years leading into this every blood test i had was anemic. The Dr kept giving me iron infusions to get the levels back up.He insisted the CD was not the problem.Once i got myself under a different Dr (via A&E) he had no hesitation in admitting me to hospital.Following all the usual tests & the failure of Steroids to get me out of trouble i had my 2nd resection.During the period on Steroids my haemoglobin levels went up rapidly but as soon as i tapered i was in trouble again.
Active CD was the reason i was anemic but the hopeless consultant i was under couldn't see that.
I hope you can get the CD under control, get your haemoglobin level back up & start to feel better ASAP.

Best Wishes

6 is REALLY low. It will definitely cause you to feel completely lethargic, mentally slower, and overall just like you have a virus or something....no energy. I've been transfused before. I never noticed feeling better immediately, but usually by the next day started feeling much better. I hate getting tranfused....just weird to think someone else's blood is going into you! But you have to do what is needed. What drugs are you on to manage your crohn's?

Mine has been as low as 3.4. The doctors were amazed that I was still alive, walking, and laughing. I have Beta Thasslemia as well as Crohn's. 6 is low. The infusion will take a couple of days to make you feel better. I get muscle spasms when they start the infusion if they do not give me benadryl first. You will be an energizer bunny once the iron kicks in.

I usually dont get any higher than a 10, if I get an 11 its a miracle, I get iron and blood transfusions on and off to keep me stable. my doc said it is common for Crohnies to have low hemo so you just have to keep up with it. Shannon
