Because of blood work done recently, I was told I was susceptible to hepatitis b and needed the vaccine. Yesterday, I went for the first shot. I got it but at the same time I was told it wouldn't be as effective because of the drugs I take.

Not sure about medication affecting the effectiveness of the vaccination however I do know that some people don't respond to it for some unknown reason. I had 2 rounds of the 3 vaccinations and didn't respond at all. Hepatitis B is a blood borne virus so there's no risk of catching it unless you are exposed to an infected persons blood.

There is a risk with any vaccination that you won’t seroconvert. In other words you don’t have a sufficient enough response to build up immunity.

I don’t have IBD and have never been on immunosuppressants but I didn’t seroconvert Hep B or Tuberculosis and even my Smallpox inoculation was iffy! :eek2:

The issue you have when you are on immunosuppressant medication is that your immune system may not give a rigorous enough response for you to build a natural immunity.

Being immunodeficient is annoying when it comes to vaccines - I can only have the dead ones, and there is no guarantee that the vaccine will "take" and provide me any coverage or if it does, what level of coverage.
However, as long as it does not cause problems, I go for the vaccine where possible.

Better safe than sorry!

Hep B and C vaccines won't start providing coverage until the full vaccine cycle is complete anyway, so I would wait until then to draw conclusions about the efficacy no matter which other drugs you are on.
