hey all, well thought i'd introduce myself

Hi guys, well thought I'd introduce myself and explain what's made me gravitate to this sitte. well it all started a few months ago when i got the worst stomach pains of my life. i was eating dinner put my plate down and felt so achey then 30 mins later my stomach felt like it was going to explode and i endured it for an hour thinking it would go away, I had been taking codeine for pain and just though i'd constipated myself. but this pain was severe. Anyway i remember going to the hospital and having the worst stomach pains just crying and trying to go to the toilet but was constipated and the gas building up in my stomach was killing me (sorry if too graphic). Then out of nowhere the diahorrea started and it was severe. I got discharged from the hospital saying i had a gastro virus and to just rest abd i'd be fine. that's when the vomiting started and blood in my stool and i was readmitted with a suspected infection causing colitis and i was pretty sick a whole week, worst feeling ever. I lost my appetite for weeks and dropped 13kg (about 30 pound) in 4 weeks and then the doctors started talking about crohns but it was quickly dismissed as an infection and all i had was a post infection form of IBS even though a colonoscopy and biopsy suggested crohns. But when the fatigue got so bad i accidently crashed my car. My parents and doctor forced me to stay in hospital until they could find the source of the problem. nearly 2 weeks later in hospital after my 2nd colonoscopy in a month, i was diagnosed with mild-moderate crohns in the large bowel. Luckily i had no ulcers on the 2nd colonoscopy and hence less pain. unlike the first one where i had loads of inflammation and ulcers. Anyway been on Prednisolone and Sulfasalazine and various Pain medicines depending on my symptoms and have been going ok ever since. This all happened in the last few months and all seemed a bit surreal and couldn't quite understand what the hell is wrong. But in my case i'm not too worried at least when it happens now i know whats causing it. That's all i can cover now that i can think of. My only worry is being caught stuck somewhere in pain cause i know how sudden it can come on and wouldn't wish the agony of a "flare up" on my worst enemy. Anyway, Thanks for reading if you had. Feel free to comment if you want to.

Heya,

I had the weight loss too when they discovered I had Crohn's. I notice you live in Australia, bless, lots of research for Crohn's going on there. good luck.

Hey Kiny, Yeah I'm from oz are you too? yeah i from what i've read and experienced appetite loss is a major symptom. I remember struggling to eat for the first weeks i literally couldn't handle the food. Then it just disappeared completely and i couldn't believe how quickly i was losing the weight, i was definetly concerned as this is not normal in any situation. Anyway as soon as my GI started me on the prednisolone i noticed my appetite come back and seemed to feel more nourished from food which is great :). And i hope they do find some new treatment in any research they're doing over here in this country as it's only new to me but from what i've read about people who've had it for decades my heart really goes out to them. Where as i see it as at least it hit me at 24 instead of my teenage years like some people. The body is an interesting/complex machine and i'll never take it for granted again.

Hi Kiny and welcome!!! Yeah mate, them pains can be horrible. My crohns started rather slowly, but you'll soon learn there's no pattern set for this disease and people talk about a lot of different symptoms. I hope you can keep it under control with medicine or what-not and avoid surgery for as long as pos.

Take care. :)

Hey Ari, cheers mate I'm assuming you're aiming that at me not kiny, lol. Yeah I totally understand how unpredictable the symptoms can be and my GI told me the longer you have it the more tuned in you become to a "flare up" or the things that could cause one and become much better at controlling the disease and maintaining remission. luckily so far I don't seem to be afflicted with anything other than a mild-moderate case and the Prednisolone and sulfasalazine seem to be keeping it under wraps. I also take codeine to help with diahorrea and it helps with the headaches i been getting i think from the prednisolone. I'm just glad for sites like this that are informative and help educate and i feel much calmer knowing it's something lot's of people live with and i'm grateful that i have mine under control. Cheers mate, Tim

Welcome, Tim! First off, don't ever worry about being too graphic on here. We are all in the same boat, and with the disease, modesty kind of goes out the window!

That is good news that your 2nd colonoscopy showed improvement. Were you taking any medication between the two procedures that helped the healing? If you were - stick with it. I hope you continue to improve, and hopefully you won't have to worry too much about flare ups. Wishing you all the best!

Hiya Tim
and welcome

I'm glad you got a dx of Crohn's, you do not bleed with IBS!
Now you know what's happening things should settle down now with the appropriate med regime.
Has your doc prescribed calcium supps with your Pred? This is important, Pred is a bone robber.
Good luck and we'll see you around the boards
lotsa luv

Hi Tim, yeah, I meant you mate, and apologies to Kiny for messing about with their nick like that :). I'm on my last legs now and I'm going to the hospital here tomorrow to have the stent removed from my left ureter. They cut it during the op. Loooooooooooooong and boring story and one of the reasons why you sign the papers before the op...

Hi Tim and welcome!

Glad you finally got a DX and are able to control things with the meds you are on!

Too graphic?!?! No such thing!

Be careful with those pain meds - narcotics can constipate as you already know from the codeine. And stay away from NSAIDs like Advil and ibuprofin as those can really irritate the Crohn's!

Good luck, I hope you stay well!

Hey thanks for the warm welcome guys it's much appreciated. To answer xJillx's question during my first flare up i was only given the anti-biotics called from memory flagyl and i think the other was called cipro(ciproflaxin?) and both were administered to me through IV drip during my first and i was discharged a week later and according to the GI at the time i would be fine, but since getting sick the 2nd time when i crashed my car caused by anemia and fatigue from the crohns, my new GI has said the first doctor was very silly for telling me i was fine and there was nothing wrong. I'm not sure if the anti biotics helped or not but basically haven't been as severe since and now on predisone and sulfasalazine. I'm assuming this is good/lucky my ulcers went away that quick.

Hi Astra101, thanks for the advice and welcome. I had no idea prednisolone was bad for bones and will denitely bring this up with my GI, i will say though i am weaning of them at the moment i've gone from 50mg to 12.5mg over the last few weeks. So hopefully the side effects don't affect me too much. And it's good to have stuff like this pointed out and make me aware, Thanks it's appreciated :)

To Ari, I hope you're ok mate and nothing bad happens again. My thoughts are with you and hope it all settles as even though this is all new to me i know how you must feel. Get well and thanks for the welcome :))

To ameslouise, lol at the no such thing as too graphic thing. It's comforting to know i can be honest without risking being overly candid. It's a shame about the Advil though and how it can cause ulcers i used to find that effective and don't like that i can't use it anymore. But i guess that's how it goes. I've noticed all the stronger pain meds like codeine and others in that family and even immodium can take you from diahorrea and slow you down, which can cause great relief. But am also very aware of how it could go from one extreme to the other, i'm not too sure what to think about some of these things but i'm sure i'll wrap my head around it all and have it sussed out sooner or later and the advice and little tips people have mentioned on here and in other posts have been of great help. So cheers and thanks for the welcome and tips. Tim
