hi, my name is steve and this is my story

on march 31, i had gone to the usual chinese place that i eat at. at certain times, i would get some mild food poisoing, but for some strange reason, i kept going back because when the food was good, it was great. anyway, 2 days after, i had some strange bloating in my stomach, so i called my gi and he told me to go to the er, could be diverticulitis. i had just found out a month earlier that i had a vitamin d deficiency, and my mom died 6 months prior, so i started to smoke a bit to relieve the stress. anyway, went to the hosp, they took a cat scan and told me they had to take me right away. april fools for me, lol. had emergency surgury, small bowell obstruction, no resection. it was pretty crazy when they put the ng tube and the foley in and rolled me away, however, i was not scared. it was all like something out of a twilight zone episode, as i rolled into the surgury suite. i woner why they call them suites? the surgical team was waiting there and when i woke up, i was screaming in pain. could not eat for 5 days, but released on the eighth day. follow up, with a lower gi small bowell enterogrpohy- confirmed crohns. the strange thing is i had no symptoms and i am 54, but gi told me it could be vit d def plus smoking, so now i dont smoke and take 3000 mg of vit d plus pentassa and cipro. they want to put me on humira, but i wont go that route now. i feel well, no symptoms, so its all very confusing. i moderate my diet very carefully. i only eat chicken, yogurt, oatmeal, etc. only healthy foods, no junk. i am glad i found this forum and wish all of you guys the best. thanx

Welcome Steve from another NY'er.....what part are you from?.....

Glad to see you are not needing any drugs right now - good thing your doc sent you to the ER when he did!

Hey Steve, welcome!! That's a tough way to find out you've got crohns!! I wouldn't dare offer any med advice. Hope it continues well for you!! Good luck!!

ty alot dexky, yeah, it was a shock, but i feel ok now, guess the meds are working, i hope, be well.

Hi Steve and :welcome:

Good to see you here. That was a bit like Roo, rolled into the OT for an appendicectomy came out with, you've got Crohns! If you already had a GI do you think some of the symptoms of whatever you experiencing previously may have actually been Crohns?

It's good to hear that things have settled down for you and the diet and drugs are working. This is a great place with heaps of friendly and knowledgeable people. I hope you stick around so we can get to know you better.

Welcome aboard!

All the best, :)
Dusty

ty dusty, and no, i had no symptoms which makes my case very atypical and very difficult to understand, but i had 3 opinions and , crohns was confirmed, so i just eat right and the pentassa and cipro are ok for now. i will probobly have to go on humira or cimzia, but the side effect profile really scares me,so i will see what happens

Hey Steve, the side effect profile of all the meds are pretty scary. As the father of a ten year old with crohns, we felt like we were playing Russian roulette trying to decide whether to start this or that med. Just remember, they will monitor you very closely when you start any new med to make sure it's doing the positive and not the negative. Good luck!!

hi dexky, i fully understand the russian roulette scenerio. it must have been so difficult with a child and i hope your child is ok and the meds are working well. as for me, i am pretty tough and have been through alot. survived a car fire, plane crash, and had prostate cancer, which i had 2 yrs ago, and thank god the surgury worked, but this disease scares me. i remember seeing my gi, 4 days out of the hospitol and he told me i have this disease with no cure and he rattled off a list of medications and scenarios. my face turned white and i walked out and told him to call me. i was in shock, but i adjusted, just trying to work it out. wishing you kid the best of health
