Anyone have a surgical correction of a chronic anal fissure? My anal fissure is NOT big at all, maybe 1 cm or the size of a small hearing aid battery, for example. I was referred to a surgeon today and I have an apt for Friday. I don't want to take a lot of time off work and I 'm wondering what is the standard procedure for something like this. Again it's pretty small and uncomplicated it just won't heal -- I do NOT want to stay in the hospital for a few days or something ridiculous! Is it usually outpatient? Thanks for your information.

I had a flap repair surgery on a rectovaginal fistula. The surgery was done as outpatient and was a breeze. My surgeon advised me to take at least two weeks off of work, but I feel that I could easily have returned in one week. This surgery gave me relief for almost a year. However, I do continue to have problems with multiple fistulas, although I am not sure if any of them are in the exact same place as the one which was repaired. I am going to see another surgeon tomorrow.

I had a fissurectomy and was in and out the same day. Your ability to return to work depends greatly on your ability to deal with pain and/or function while on pain killers. I needed vicodin for about 2 weeks after the surgery to deal with the pain, but I can also function on vicodin so it is your call on the time off. I would recommend at least 2-3 days however. Try to plan a Wednesday surgery so you get the benefit of a weekend to increase your time off.

at least 3 days off work (with your trusty donut pillow at your side), and then like they said above...depends on the severity of the fissure they are repairing and your pain /drug threshold. :)

Good luck. :) (Better to have it fixed then open and hurting)
