I wanted to ask, how often you guys watch your diet ??

I tend to eat normal foods with less oil and spices. I eat Pizza often and drink Milk daily. I'm not sure, if im doing the right thing. How Cautious are you guys ???

I don't normally have problems with food. I can eat whatever I want as long as I'm not in a flare.

I'm uber cautious... I do occasionally cheat. But very rarely. Trigger foods I avoid as much as possible, cause the results of those are spontaneous and very nasty. And even those foods that are on my avoid list BUT aren't trigger foods that have an immediate effect on me, but could be bad over the long haul, I stay away from them too. We only have one GI tract, they don't transplant them, and docs are always trying to cut it out of us a piece at a time, so my way of looking at it is to baby the tract I've got left as much as possible. Now, if others choose to gamble with their GI tract, that's their call. You know what they say about gambling... it's not what you win, its' how much can you afford to lose. Your GI tract... that's pretty high stakes.

I eat whatever I want.

>sticks out her tongue then runs away<

<jokes on me sometimes when I ignore the very very few trigger foods>

I'm not as cautious as I know I should be.
My first 4 months on Humira I could eat almost anything, but I think it caught up to me. Spicy is not good for me, and neither is apple cider or beans. I'm a big fruit eater, but I'm trying to cut back on my roughage lately.
If I feel really bad, I will eat more mildly, like yogurt, cheese, and bread. I always feel better on plain stuff like that. One problem is that I can't seem to narrow down what bothers me. Sometimes I will think that an orange, for example, wrecked my guts but then the next time I eat an orange I'm fine. Who knows.

Very hard to make plans, I hear some people do lose some friends along the way for those reasons. So far, I am lucky.

Oh me not leaving the house is nothing new, in fact that is one thing my friends can count on. They call it "falling off the face of the earth." Sometimes I disappear for 6 months or longer without talking to anyone. I need people breaks, as much as some of you need bathroom breaks.

I am weird

<looks all around her and very loudly hisses> shhh it's a secrets </weird hissing>

i clicked 'sometimes', but the true answer would be 'most of the time'. i do know my limits, i certainly know what's going to hurt me and never cross that line.. but occasionally i will retry something that only gave me a mild problem in the past, just to see if i still need to eliminate it from my diet.

also, there have been occasions where i've eaten something which has historically given me no problem, but then turns out to cause a bad obstruction or diarrhea.

what i know i don't do, is follow a good nutritious diet - hence my relief that i am now taking multivits & covering this aspect.

what about soda ???? Do u guys stay away ????

I stay away from soda all the time. I mostly drink Sunny D, Fruit Punch, Water, Gatorade, Hawaiian Punch.

I drink soda, mostly caffeine free. I can't drink punches and most juices. The citric acid content plays havoc on my stomach. I drink my soda with a lot of ice to help cut down on some of the carbonation to keep it from building gas in my guts. We ran out of ice a while back and I started putting a little water in my soda and my wife thought I was weird.

I drink ginger ale or 7-up sometimes, but I am mainly a juice kind of girl - orange, lemonaid, apple raspberry and the like.

And Dan - you are weird..I don't think the water and the soda makes much of a difference in that respect ;)

Surprisingly it does. It kills some of the carbonation, much like with watered down soda. I knew a lady that shook up soda over and over again until the carbonation was gone before she drank it. I can't wait that long. ;)

My favorites?
Vernors (only vernors ginger ale will do, I could drink gallons)
Rootbeer (especially if it's Dog & Suds rootbeer, mmmmmm, I could drink gallons)
Cherry Lemon-lime soda
Cream Soda
Orange Cream Soda
Black Cherry Soda

Ya, I have had literally hundreds of kidney stones - I have one kidney called a horseshoe kidney. The shape alone creates the perfect conditions for sediment retention. I always have up to 5 or 6 kidney stones in my kidney at any given point in time. Been getting them now for 12 years -

Every time I pee it is russian roulette, expect my kidney is always loaded ;) I just have a lot of misfires (o0o0 lucky me)

I know my limits and very rarely cheat, and I'm used to diet severity from bodybuilding, only this severity is depressing because it doesn't get me the same type of results and satisfaction. Mainly because I have a dynamic no-no list, which changes weekly or daily, akin to the above posts, my bad and good foods often trade places and frequently leave me with previously innocuous foods causing me writhing bloating/diarrhea pains.

edit: to add, I can't really have soda or sugar-dense drinks, both cause gas and diarrhea, respectively.

edit 2: Isla, my mom has had chronic Kidney stone issues for years and years, and has told me the pains are classified as worse than being burned in a fire.

i drink diet caffeine-free coke every day, probably one or two glasses & am ok on this. i also drink ice-cold lemonade when i'm feeling a bit nauseas - it helps. i can't drink any fruit juices because of the acid content - if it doesn't get me high up as in oesophagus area, then it gets me lower down & gives me gripes.

Ya it's pretty horrible, it has made me pretty fearful of pain. It is probably my number #2 fear in the world.

I can drink cokes. I don't get any gas or anything from it. My Crohn's usually flares in my rectum so the digestion has already occurred by the time it has hit my rectum. It helps me a little bit when I'm constipated to drink some Dr. Pepper and within a half hour I'm in the bathroom.

That is like me and coffee and I too use it to my advantage (sucks though when I want to use it to combat my fatigue - still worth it though!)

And number 1 being?

Looking up ... the sky, buildings, anything taller than say 9 or 10 feet. Sucks too, I was watching a documentary on I.M Pei (designed the Louvre Pyramid) and I keep getting dizzy, sick to my stomach, and a racing heartbeat every 5 minutes cause the angled shots they keep taking of his architecture.

Me too! when I'm not flaring too badly I drink about a liter of tea or some other beverage and it triggers a BM every time. I wonder why.

Coke's can have a laxative effect.

Darnit, southerners!!

What about the person who mentioned rootbeer, that's not a "coke" it's a pop (soda).

Ah, that's gotta be harsh. Is there a name for that sort of phobia, did you develop it from some sort of trauma?

How do you cope with such a "trait"? :(

haha Benson. I will coke's coke until the day I die.lol

I feel like I stick I stick it to all the people in Connecticut when I say it. I really didn't like CT.

Seriously, when I worked as a busboy 9 years ago, I saw southerners ask the waiter 'what kind of coke' we had, the waiter said "Regular and diet" and the woman's jaw dropped because it's one of the nicest places in Chicagoland (Port Edwards). I'm sure she was wondering why only 2 choices.

I try to be very cautious about what I eat, but it is definitely not easy. Most of my food is very bland

I am overly cautious with what I eat.
No carbonated drinks either...I do like the lightly flavoured water they have in small water bottle size now.

/thread hijacking (maybe I should just start a phobia thread?)

EDIT: Started a phobia thread :)

I put never. Right now I need to actually start a food diary as I am still working trying to get to remission. I probably am not helping as I eat whatever I want and still have all the issues that go along with it. I really like food though - my big vice, now that I don't smoke :).

i'm fall under the can't quite figure it out category. I eat some thing one day and it's great, the next pains and cramps. So far i've noticed i don't seem to be under the same conditions with my crohn's as most on here. I get severe bouts of constipation, and nausea. Followed by what one can only describe as quick weight loss. I've been working a constant 3 to 4 days of weight gain (backed up if you will) followed quick loss in one or two days. Right now i'm fluctuating between 5 to 7 lbs . And haven't really changed what i eat.
Coffee is sometimes a blessing to get things working. But not lately.
Went to my GI today for a follow up and he thinks its fine. Drink some prune juice eat some fruit and all should be good. So look out Prune juice here i come. *ewww i hate prune juice!!!*

Itsmeagain - I am also on that spectrum of Crohns. I don't think GI's respect this presentation as much as the opposite. They have no clue how uncomfortable it is. I have gained over 30 pounds from my disease, without any weight loss. And I too use coffee to get things moving, I say it works about 50-80% of the time.

The other things I can use to get my system moving is strawberries and apple cider - it has to be cider though, apple juice doesn't work for me so those might be options before prune juice. That stuff should be illegal it's so nasty.

It makes me wonder though by my food being "good one day, bad the next" if I don't have crohns and IBS. My symptoms are more synonymous with IBS rather than IBD.

No carbonated beverages at all. I am rigidly careful about what I eat when I am flaring. I have been known to go several days without eating at all and only eat when I start to pass out or something along those lines. If I go for at least two months without serious problems I might get a little more risky but some foods I will absolutely not eat ever. As far as beverages go it's water flavored water or fruit punch. Drinks with a lot of acid make a wreck out of my gut.
