How long after your resection did you get your next flare?

Had my resection December 07, 2010, and the past 4 weeks I have been having pain, vision/joint issues etc., and during my infusion 3 weeks ago my blood test showed 2 inflammation markers.

So now my Doctor wants repeat colonoscopy/endoscopy. Of course I am fighting that and doing an MR Enterography instead on the 14th. If it looks bad will do the procedures and might need Remicade more frequently : (

I just figured that after surgery I would be good for awhile not just one year? If this is a flare, and not just my Remicade wearing off, then it will only be my 2nd flare.

I was sick again a year after my resection. (July 9, 2009 - August 10, 2010). When I was released from the hospital, the doc said that It would take at least 4-5 years to get another flare. Famous last words. August 2010 was my second flare too and I didnt have another one so far.

I have been crazy lucky with a 10 years with no flare... I guess taking the whole colon out was removing chances of being sick at the same time... I might get a resection this summer... hopefully I'll have a few years of peace again and wish it were like that for everyone.

They removed 13 inches total. 7" of the large and 6" of the small intestine.

It has been quite a year but seem to be on the mend!

3 months.

The resection took out the worst section & got me out of the awful pain but all the usual problems started to come back.Slowly the illness got worse again.
Steroids would give me some help but once i stopped.....back to square one.
The immune system suppresive drugs i used would get it under control but the side affects were so nasty i had to stop taking them.
Just over a year ago i started taking AMP (extract of Aloe) and it has given me my best year since i was diagnosed.

After my first one, it took about 2 years before I flared. That flare topped off with an emergency resection as I was completely blocked up, as scar tissue from the old resection was causing a stricture...

After the emergency resection, it took about 3-4 months before I was flaring again...that flare is fading out now.

This has got me worried. I am dreading that MRI.

Seriously going to switch my appointment to a closer date cause I need to get it fixed if something is wrong. Damn it : (

Kate,

I hate to be a downer, but I had a strictureplasty Feb/2010 of the terminal ileum, doc said I would be good for 10-15 years. Hahaha, pain started within 4 months, when it was finally decided I needed surgery again, they said they were going to remove 15 inches of bowel! No, I ended up with another strictureplasty Nov/2010 of the ileoceccal valve. And doc says, he still doesn't know if this worked, sfffh! :ywow: I guess doctor's really are just practicing.... :(

I wish you the best and that everything it will all work out for you!

:goodluck::hug:

Hi there, 3 months for me as well from op to flare up. One thing though is I stopped taking the Methotrexate in June (wanted to start a family and I developed a stricture whlst on it so it wasn't doing a great job either), had the op in Sept and the flare started at end of Nov/beginning of Dec. I wasn't on any meds (only drinking modulen shakes) as I had been trying to avoid the steroids so in total I was on no treatment for about 5 months........not surprised that tummy had something to say about this!

I am at the three month mark right now, and I am getting severe D. Do flares manifest in different ways after surgery? I use to get C when flared, and in a lot of pain but it is the complete opposite!

After my 1st surgery in 97 it took 2 years. Second one in 2002 it was back in about 4mths & my 3rd surgery it was back within 8 weeks. But as you can see it varies greatly. Also when a surgeon tells you something like "your cured" or "that'll see you right for 10 yrs" I take it with a pinch of salt. Any good Gastro Specialist will never make such promises.
Best Wishes

Sarah has been in remission since surgery in July 2006 and Matt since his surgery last April. Yikes, touch wood!

Grant is spot on. Many a surgeon will look at there handiwork and proudly declare...your cured!!!
