Hi Mazen,
I have posted extensively on this subject because I also take them a lot. They are the only thing that works for me. I have a complex fistula, meaning it has branches like a tree, which become very infected (abcesses) when I don't take the drugs. I have tried Cipro on its own, but it appears I need the flagyl. I usually do a month cycle, then take a month off. About that time, the infection is starting to return and I start back up. I have been doing this cycle for over a year (not that exact schedule, it has been trial and error figuring out exactly what works). I do not like the idea of taking them long term either. I have experienced the tingling limbs with the flagyl and I know that Cipro has some other possible serious side effects.
Today I am going to have a flap advancement surgery. My fitula is external (rectovaginal), so the surgery is a pretty simple outpatient procedure. This is where they clean it all out and take a healthy piece of tissue and graft it over the internal opening of the fistula. I had it done before in 2006 for the same fistula, but it returned a year later. I am keeping my fingers crossed for this one. I would like to get some relief once and for all.
If I remmber right, you have an internal fistula, right? I know the surgery would be a lot more major, but there are people on this forum who have had surgery (ileostomies, I think) after dealing with persistant fistula problems who have said they wish they had done it sooner.
Good luck with everything. Whatever you end up doing, I hope you finally get some refief.
