How Long do Side Effects Last After Stopping Humira?

Hi,

My wife was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2010 because of fistulas and other tests they ran. She does not have stomach aches and her last colonoscopy was super clean, so she is said to have the "fistulizing Crohn". To avoid more fistulas, she has been on Humira for 3 years. Lately she started having one infection after another. Currently she has a rash on both legs, she has some kind of sinus infection, and she regularly has strange bumps that come and go. Oh and her left arm often goes numb and her left eye is twitching often (the kind of small annoying twitching that she feels but that is hard to see). She never had that before starting Humira.

Because her Crohn's diagnosis was never very convincing to us and to some of her doctors, we decided to take the risk and take her off the Humira, hoping that the fistulas were originally caused by something else than Crohn's. Her Gi is ok with that.

Now it has been 2 months since she stopped and she is still getting infections. Do you know how long the side effects of Humira can be expected to last? I have been searching around, but could not find anything on that. At a few places it suggests that in rare cases, some side effects may be permanent. That's scary, but I don't know if it applies to this never-ending trend of small infections.

Any help or comment would be greatly appreciated!

Hi WoodGuy and welcome to the forum! :D

It will take about 5 months for Humira to leave the system unfortunately.

It is important to try and avoid exposure to infections during your treatment. Let your doctor know as soon as possible if you get any symptoms of any infection, so that it can be treated without delay. This also applies for five months after you stop using this medicine, as this is how long it may take for the medicine to be fully removed from the body.

She'll need to continue to try and avoid people who are sick and try to use hand sanitizer and wash her hands often.

Is she going to have any other tests done to see what the actual cause is if it isn't Crohn's? I hope she starts feeling better soon. Keep us posted. :)

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for the information, this is helpful. Now at least we know what to expect.
We saw her doctor yesterday. He agrees that the various infections may be due to Humira, but not the numbing of the arm and twitching of the eye. Fortunately, he is positive that these are not symptoms of something big like a neurological problem. Most likely this is just muscle pain due to lack of activity/sudden strain, or something like that.
So far so good!

I hope it isn't serious and that she starts feeling better. Keep us posted on how she's doing. :)
