hiya all, my son received his results yesterday and he has UC his preds are tapering from 40mg now down to 20mg, when he comes off the preds all together is there a chance he could have an immediate flare up? and how long does it generally take for a moon face to dissapear?

many thanks
cindy

I noticed once I started getting to a lower dose the moonface started to go away. but if you're son's case is really bad, then there is a chance of being prednisone dependent. If that is the case they will try alternate line of medication.

In my case I am pred dependent, until I had a major flare my maintaining dose was 5mg. I noticed no side effects from that level. For the record I am the 1% that every medication refers to when they talk about the crazy and rare side effects.

I was prednisone dependent for a while, bouncing around between 2.5-10mg. The moon face improved at lower doses for me, but wasn't completely gone until at least a month later. If he's only been on it short term, I'd expect it not to be too bad. Everyone is different, though.

thanks

thank you for your replys!
specialist seems to think jamie may have a flare up when his preds finish, hes dealing with things quite well, but hes struggling with the comments about his face hes only just 16 n teenage hormones r running rampant!

Oh gosh, c1nd1!!! I completely empathize with him! I was 15 when I was on my first big dose of prednisone and I was miserable! It's hard enough being so sick when you are that young, let alone the side effects from the meds that people can actually see. It was hard for me. i hope he's feeling better and the moon face goes away soon!!

If he's not breaking out like the plague tell him to be thankful. At 24 I was on prednisone for a bit and didn't have a square centimeter on my face free of white heads and deep painful breakouts.

My dad always told me "at least you don't have leukemia!"

Good luck with the taper and him getting off the medication. It can be a hurdle but a lot of the time it's doable.
