I am going to be having ileostomy surgery soon and was just wondering how long people have been signed off work for?im worried about having to go back before I feel ready to... Thanks :) kat

Kat it's up to you to tell your doctor when your ready not him or her and it's especially not up to your work to tell you how quickly your supposed to recover.i,ve had loads of surgeries none for crohns luckily many for the same orthopedic condition it varied widely.just take your time and get well.good luck

My surgeon told me that it would be 6-8 weeks before id be able to resume most things in life. I think it's an important conversation to have with your surgeon prior to surgery. As said in the post above it's important for you to feel fully better before returning to work and open communication with the doctor is essential.

Not sure if this is helpful, but I wasn't back to "normal" until about 3 months after my surgery. I did have complications, and I'm sure that that didn't help, but if you can get a good bit of time off, I think that would be the best for you. Good luck!!!

Hello Kat

The deciding factor for me was being able to drive to the station or to the office of one of my clients. I was told a minimum of six weeks after surgery as you have to be confident to do an emergency stop without worrying about any pain from the operation.

Having said that it really does vary from person to person and there is no point in returning to work too early and then having a relapse. It also depends on whether the surgery is keyhole or a laparotomy. One thing the specialist nurse was hot on was not lifting heavy objects, and by that she meant things like a full kettle!

I started recording my experiences just before I had my ileostomy - 11th October 2010 - and have kept it up ever since. There's a fair amount of detail on the recovery process. If you're interested have a look at - www.crohnoid.com - the links to the pages are at the bottom right hand side.

Good luck with your surgery. I found the whole thing a very positive experience and 3 years on I'm not taking anything for the Crohn's except Loperamide.

I've just realised that it's this Sunday 3 years ago today (another beautiful sunny autumn day) that I was waiting for the hospital to tell me which ward to report to and what time they wanted me. That was probably the most stressful few hours I have ever spent! Everything that followed wasn't that bad and ever since I've found a positive attitude through all the ups and downs.
