How quickly can you flare

Okay, since I'm not the one with Crohn's, I don't always know the ins and outs of this disease. My husband just finished a round of entocort and was feeling pretty good maybe a little tender in his usual flare site but nothing that he thought was anything to complain about. Anyway, he cheated and ate some food he shouldn't have this weekend and now we are sitting up at 5am and he is in agony in the middle of a flare. My question is, how soon can your flare ups hit? Can you eat something and feel sick with in 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours? I know it varies from person to person but you guys have been so helpful with other things that I thought I would bounce this off of you.

He said it felt different then his usual flare tenderness so I didn't question it. I try to give him the benefit of the doubt, he is a big boy! :) I am so tired of trying to figure out what this guy can eat. So far it seems like nothing. I have been trying the specific carb diet but not as strictly as possible because he is fairly new to crohn's and struggling with this whole thing. I'm going to have to call his doctor tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

I hadn't had any pain for an entire month (first time in almost a year) and then Saturday night, I had BBQ and I think it was the sauce that triggered mine, but I was in agony within 20 minutes. I've noticed that with food, if I eat something "bad", it goes right through me and the pain is instant.

hi cricket

the quickest flare i've had was after one bite of sweet and sour pork, literally i had ONE bite and the horrible cramping began (this was the day that sent me to emerg and crohn's was first mentioned), there are days i'll begin crampy within 20 minutes after i eat... but then there are days i suspect my body was already on it's way to a flare due to subtle symptoms throughout the days and then one particular food or a certain combination of food sets off the flare.

hope your husband is feeling better now.

I think it has nothing to do with the food -why can I have chinese food one time and be fine and the next time try to have it and be sick as a dog??? I think if there is imflammation it doesn't matter what we eat...When the food hits that spot and won't be absorbed and go through properly ...well we get sick...yes, certain things make it all worse but I know if I am not flaring - meaning no to little imflammation I can eat almost anything - spicy, alcohol..whatever...what do you guys think?

it's possible that you're right, since there are certain foods that i eat that only SOMETIMES trigger a flare or whatever...

however, in my case, i think it also has a lot to do with my stricture... so when something gets stuck or i don't chew properly or eat too much too fast.... my colon goes nuts.

blah... i'm stil trying to figure it out. only thing i have found consistent is the flare ups happen usually during hormonal changes.... but food wise, very inconsistent. it's frustrating.

You make a good point. A few months ago I posted a question in the food section asking if people were able to tolerate food one day and not the next and was surprised how many people answered yes. I think that's why it's been so hard for me to pinpoint what foods upset me. The few times I wanted to drop to my knees in pain were after eating foods that didn't disturb me before and I was able to tolerate them at a different time.

I can't pinpoint foods either. I think I flare when it's my time of the month. Thats about it. Every once in a while I will have a random day, but I can count on the pain and D when it's that time.

thanks guys, he is feeling better. Still a little sore but on the mend. He didn't eat much yesterday. I think some watermelon and cream of wheat was all he could tolerate. How do you stay nourished like this? I do agree that some things don't seem to bother him one day and and a few weeks later he can be in agony over the same thing. I am happy to see that this flare was nothing like his typical "I want to die" ones. Does that mean his meds are working or that we are on the right track diet wise or that we still know nothing because this disease is a huge pain in the rear (in more ways than one)? I'm seriously wanting to throw my hands up in defeat and it has only been four months since he has been diagnosed. I don't know how you have been dealing with this for so long. I know that it just becomes a way of life but we are so tired. Thanks for your advice.

Hi,

I'm with the folks here that can't figure it out. One time chicken noodle soup is fine, the next time it's hell. I can't find rhyme or reason. I just know that when it's crampy or painful, I get real bland and do the BRAT or variations of BRAT. I also keep a journal of the things I can eat when I'm in pain, which actually is getting longer and adds nutrition without extra pain or poop. I have a couple that are comfortable to eat during "fair or foul" periods: Rice cakes (caramel) with peanut butter, hard-boiled eggs, and my favorite "comfort food", brown-sugar cinamon Pop Tarts.

Hey misscris, my girlfriend's flare ALWAYS gets worse at her time of the month. That is EVERY time like clockwork.

Before I had surgery and got the diagnosis, I was told that I had endometreosis because I only had the pain during my periods. But now I know that its not the case. That was the only symptom I really had, and obviously it's an easy one to overlook due to the timing. You'll notice while being on here that just about every woman has complained about it at one point or another. It's very common for females to have their flare or feel like flare pain during that time. My understanding from the doc is that everything down there swells up and such when it's period time, so that could contribute. <shrug> Who knows.

Is your girlfriend on the forum too?

Take a multi vitamin daily and drink stuff like ensure, boost, carnation breakfast mix. Any of those have tons of good stuff when I'm unable to eat properly.

When I went off of Entocort I felt AMAZING for about 3 weeks, then my period came & it's been downhill from there. My other symptoms come & go, but I've had the d daily since then, that was back in June.
