I just listened to a great discussion regarding microbes by Jonathan Eisen. He discussed a number of interesting thoeries but one in particular was the risk of delivering via c-section becausing microbial colonization occurs during vaginal delivery. My babies were c-section. Votes? Thoughts?
I have often heard the discussion that we have disrupted our natural balance of microbes with antibacterial products and sanitizers but don't remember hearing this take on it before.

Vaginal no drugs BUT they did hang an iv bag of antibiotics prior to breaking my water because of something I tested for prior to delivery but not sure what it is...it is the thing that if you deliver without the antibiotics the baby could be born blind or something.

I have heard that theory before Angie.

Both of mine were uncomplicated vaginal births.

Dusty. :)

Both vaginal... only difference, Stephen had to be induced 4 or 5 days before due date as I was losing amniotic fluid; in the doctors words, 'all is fine now; I don't want to wait for a problem'. But, he was healthy size, etc. - no issues after birth.

Vaginal birth for both. Although my 1st was induced, my crohnie(2nd) tried to make his appearance before we could get to the hospital...barely made it to the room and the doc didn't make it to the room til after. When they checked me(mind you they were being very condescending about the fact that I thought he was coming now) his head was there and then all chaos ensued they were telling me to wait on the doctor. Seriously? Like I had a choice in the matter at that point.

Often wondered about this, since my non-Crohn's son was vaginal and my Crohn's son was C-section. Crohn's kid also had thick meconium, wonder about that effect too.

normal vaginal birth, 3 healthy sibs also normal vaginal births but ALL were induced 7-10 days overdue and all over 9 lbs-chronie 9.7lbs

Hey Jenn- "healthy" sib had meconium here. Both full term. Non chronie 9lbs 3oz. Claire was 9lbs 1/2oz.

So many variables! Mine were both around 8lbs and a week late with natural labor. Crohnie kid wouldn't fit, had his head sideways, I say it still is... ;)

C-section a month early here! He was breech, ouch! Interesting theory. Looks like we have debunked the theory though with so many variables!:)

Very true. Always wondered about the microbe theory...I have always avoided antibacterial products, especially while pregnant, (I have read that this is another possible link) but interesting subject regardless! TY for all of the replies!
