humira after 1 abscess prevent future occurences?

Hello all...

My 20-year-old son is healing nicely from surgery to drain perianal abscess on 7/12. He is doing most of his usual activities, but still has home health nurse come daily to change packing. Wound is now mostly healed even with skin, but there is one small hole remaining that takes packing.

He went on his own today to our GI doc for first time (I just got discharged from hospital for a hysterectomy!!). I am proud of him though because he had a list of questions to ask since in 3 weeks he goes back to college two hours away from home.

He felt some pain in rectal area all the way back in June but didn't say anything! I told him he needs to find out who to call while in school (GI or surgeon?) and feels any symptoms of abscess so as not to let it go so long without treatment! GI gave him names of GI docs in college town, but also wants to put him on humira (azathioprine). He did a blood test to see if he has a gene that would prevent him from taking it.

So my question is has anyone had success with humira in controlling crohns symptoms and preventing recurrence of abscess?? It looks like it comes in tablet or injection....is it tablet for crohn's??? I also saw that it could cause fertility problems for both men and women....he's only 20.

Any advice would be most helpful!

Many thanks!!

Hi Allicat
Wow, I feel for you! It's worrying enough with a healthy kid going off on their own and with you having your own issues too. Glad to hear that he's feeling a bit better and it's good that the GI is coming up with an action plan for him to follow.
Re: the medication, Humira and Azathioprine are two different drugs, H is taken by injection and A is in tablet form. Is it possible that he is being prescribed both?
I haven't had a perianal abscess or been on Humira, but if you have a look in our Fistula and Abscess subforum:
http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76
there are plenty of people there who have. It might also be worth checking out the Humira club in the Treatment section of the forum too.
Best of luck to you both and I hope recovery from your op is going well.

Thanks grumbleton. The doc wrote a few things down in a note and my son gave it to me. He had listed 3 docs in college town, and then wrote azathioprone -- Humira. So I thought they were the same thing! And I even looked them up on drugs.com and didn't catch it. Thanks for clarifying.

When the doc calls with the results of blood work, I will check which one he is thinking of...

In the meantime, I will check them out on the forum.

thank you again!
