I was admitted to hospital some 8+ years ago with severe abdominal pain lower right side. Appendicitus was suspected, but after going to surgery, a diagnosis of Crohns was made and the immediate problem was a blockage at the terminal illeum. A portion of the small intestine was removed and I have had no further problems until this past Fall when in September I developed severe pains again in the same area. Rushed to hospital and another blockage was diagnosed in the area of the previous surgery. An ng tube was inserted and several days passed until the blockage dissolved. No other treatment was initiated.
And again, four months later, in January I developed the same intense pain again and yet again went to hospital. Another diagnosis of blockage in the same area. Again an ng tube inserted and no further treatment on discharge. I spoke with a dietitian regarding my diet, at my insistence, to determine if certain foods were prone to blocking me. It was from her that I received invaluable information!
Since then the specialist has ordered a colonoscopy which shows the scar tissue from the surgery many years ago was restricting passage. There was minor inflammation Chron's related, but not of any significance.
After reading your forum, I see most Chrons patients here seem to refer to flareups, i.e. diarrhea symptoms etc. I would describe my only flareup symptom to be a blockage. I am so tired of getting to that stage and ending up in hospital. I have a followup appt. later this month as a result of the colonoscopy and wonder what the plan is in my case.
Are there many of you out there that would describe their symptoms/results as mine? And how would you describe your situation now?
I have eaten normally since the surgery several years ago and only recently have had problems, but then again I had eaten a candy apple, which of course has a tough apple skin under the candy and as well, had eaten fresh cocunut which I can see being a problem in hindsight!
I have been able to eat salads, raw/fresh veg's and fruits etc. and no problems up until I ate the two items above which ultimately took me to hospital.

Welcome! Pull up a seat and there is plenty of beer in the fridge. As far as symptoms are concerned, what you explained there is experienced by most of us, but rarely resulting in blockage. Apple peels, seeds, nuts, uncooked celery, and popcorn are all evil for us to eat. Some also have problems with high fiber diets. Speak with your dietitian and get a good plan in place to manage the disease and prevent further blockage. Are you on any meds to control the inflammation?

Thanks for the welcome! Funny thing, for the past 8 plus years since my 1st block, I have probably eaten 2 bags popcorn/week, enjoyed nuts of all kinds, etc. Suddenly now being a problem surprises me. But since last block in January, I am afraid to go back to eating normally (no apple skins, coconut of course!).
I am not taking any medications. In fact, neither the doctor nor the gi specialist have recommended diet restriction!
I go to the gi specialist later this month and we will see what he says. I would prefer to have the scar tissue removed and possibly give me another 8-10 years of normalcy! I have to say, I have no other symptoms other than the 3 blockages. A lot of us have diarrhea due to certain foods, but not necessarily due to crohns. So it's hard to determine whether a bout of "d" is due to crohns or from simply the diet!

I can see how you feel. I really do miss my popcorn the most! After that would be my salads. But I think I will try a little salad one day soon to "test the water|" ha ha!

Welcome Lill....I too am pretty new here.

I hear ya on the popcorn & salad.....mmmmmmmmm.....I miss them so!
