i don't understand

when i was admitted into the hospital 3 days ago my albumin was 2.6 and they need for me to get it up to 3.0 so they put me on tpn and it has been about 3 days of it already and all of a sudden my albumin level is down to 2.1! i don't understand how that could happen if i am getting all these nutrients through my iv. i really hope they aren't going to postpone my surgery because my nutrition is coming up very low in my blood tests. i guess they said if it doesn't get better by tomorrow then they can give me a pure albumin infusion. i don't see why they didn't just do that in the first place. anyway when i got to the hospital i weighed 112 and now i am 115 so i have gained about a pound a day of water weight from all this fluid going in me/sitting around a lot. now to top that all off my lips are beet red and chapped, my nose is red underneath (kind of an itchy rash) and my entire body is really itchy (but there is no rash on my body except for my nose). not only that but i've been super nauseous and have been having shoot pains in my stomach and i have been only going poop 1-2 times a day. i feel so backed up. what is going on with me! :( i really want to get my surgery in 2 days as planned but i am afraid at this rate i wont be able to :confused2:

Bummer, I'm sorry it ended up going down, that's frustrating :( What was the results today?

I hope things improve quickly and you're able to get that surgery. I wish you well, please keep us updated!

*hugs*

Hey tishbite - I wouldn't worry about those numbers. They would have started the TPN slowly and probably only got it to full dose by day two or three, so give it a bit more time. Are you allowed to add nutritional drinks by mouth too? That also helps a lot, unless you are on full bowel rest. It's no wonder you are going less to the toilet! Have they tried some Benadryl for the itching etc? Anything for the nausea? I found I.V Ondansetron (Zofran) was a life saver with the TPN, and stomach acid-lowering drugs can help the nausea too.
Hope you manage to get some rest and calm your mind, which is important. Every issue you have should be questioned with your docs, if only to give you some peace. Try not to worry too much about whether it takes an extra day or so to prepare you, even though it can be really trying.
good luck.
