I have not been diagnosed with Crohn's disease yet. I am 49. There have been hints of it in the past but no real investigative work til now. My problem is I am nauseated. It is the worst since the beginning of this episode which started 6 months.

When it started, I almost died with bacteria in the blood. CT scan then showed Diverticulitis. There was nursing home stay in that time along with 2 other hospitalizations. I had c diff, acute kidney failure along with other things that I can't remember. No colonoscopy was done at that time because we were moving and would do follow up in Arizona.

On the way to Arizona, I got sick during our move and a CT scan was done in Houston that showed fluid in the pelvic area and colon area. ER doctor said this usually indicates cancer.

Once here in Arizona they did everything from blood work-colonoscopy-ct scan-to now they want to do a small bowel capsule test. The colonoscopy which was done here in Arizona showed some form of an ulcer in the large intestine that was healing. With the small bowel capsule test, they are looking for lesions in the small bowel. They said it was common with Crohn's disease. The blood work they did showed Crohn's disease.

My big concern is I am nauseated as bad as I was at the beginning of this problem. I don't want to eat and I don't want to drink yet I am gaining weight which is weird. 6 months ago I didn't eat for nearly a week and barely drank anything and I ended up in bad shape. It has me concerned.

I apologize if this is not enough detail or doesn't make good sense. I just don't feel well.

I'm so sorry to hear of everything you are going through.

Hopefully the small bowel imaging wll help conclusively diagnose you.

It sounds like you have raised inflammatory markers in your blood (ESR and CRP). These aren't specific to Crohn's as they indicate there is inflammation somewhere in your body but don't say where. It might be useful if your GI also did a fecal calprotectin test where you give a stool sample and they test it for a marker of inflammation. This test tells you about inflammation specifically in the gut.

Did they take biopsies when they did the colonoscopy? As Crohn's can sometimes be confirmed from the biopsies.

I'd also be concerned about your lack of nutrition. If you have been unwell then your health can decline rapidly without adequate nutrition. As soon as they have done the small bowel capsule test I would ask your GI to prescribe complete nutrition drinks so that you can do your best to get nutrition that way - and when used exclusively without eating normal food a liquid diet can treat inflammation in the bowel and is used as a first line therapy to get Crohn's into remission. Bottom line though is that it shouldn't hurt you and ought to be a good supportive therapy to improve your nutritional status. Complete nutrition drinks like Ensure and Boost usually work well.

In the meantime has your doctor put you on any anti-nausea meds? It's very important that you should at least be able to get enough fluids.

How long until they do the small bowel capsule test? I hope you don't have to wait long.

Do talk to your doctor about the nausea and difficulty in getting adequate nutrition. It's much better to act sooner than have to play catch up with that.

I do hope you feel better soon and get some answers so that you can start treatment.
