 Hiya Guys

I was recently put on Ciprofloxacin for an ear infection and lone-behold! All of my gastro-issues disappeared! I literally - and I mean literally - spent a week dancing around my house  but then, on day 3 after finishing the Cipro...:( back to the "norm" - I was actually in the waiting room to see an Occupational Health professional for my work and had to run around the top floor looking for a toilet (no signs?!). He said this was significant and to go back to my GP ASAP and get back on the Cipro, which I did later that day as my ear infection still hadn't cleared as well. I'm now on 2 weeks more before the hell starts up again.

I thought: this HAS to be relevant - I've been having major sharp pain LRQ the last few weeks and the Cipro fixed everything whilst I was on it - these had to be relevant. Apparently not:

Thank you for your email and the interesting responce to Ciprofloxacin.

Some people with Crohns will find this treatment useful monotherapy but in itself
I would disagree with the opinion of the Occupational Health GP.

The symptom change might be co-incidental or the antibiotic treating small bowel overgrowth instead.

I would note that the tests to date; colonoscopy, MRI-small bowel and capsule which are the gold
standard tests for Crohns disease are negative.

The Calprotectin test was positive but its a test of high sensitivity but low specificity, meaning a lot of
false positives.

Might you consider some probiotics such as Symprove (Symprove.com) that might competitively
inhibit bacterial triggers.

Have you tried a gluten free diet and if so what response did you get

~This is a little frustrating as I did explain I was dairy, gluten (all cereals), yeast etc free for about 3 years now, so he hasn't listened to a word I've said. I also told him I take probiotics.

Why am I bothering? I feel like he thinks I just want to prove I have Crohns and he just has to disprove it and everything is OK. Someone needs to hand him a dictionary of what DIAGNOSTICIAN means. I don't mind what is wrong - whatever it is, I am already suffering it - it's not my job to be made to feel like a hypochondriac and offered acupuncture... it's his job to investigate what's wrong and listen to me when I can offer information that might help :voodoo:

I am not looking forward to in 2 weeks' time :(:(:(

hey. sorry youre going through this. i unserstand as the drs convinced my mom it was all in my head for 7 yrs. you need a good dr who will listen and find the answers. i quit going to them. even fired some while being hospitalised. i dont recommend you quit going. the drs in my area are plain ignorant. i had one tell me in the hospital after puking 10-14 times a day with a central line in my neck that nothing was wrong with me. tests showed crohns flare, pancreatitis, and gastritis.needless to say he appoligised which surprised me. he would have been fired. i had to find my voice. dont settle its your life and you deserve the best! great place for support.good luck!

Sorry, I wasn't quite sure from your post, which doctor is this from? Is he a diagnostician but also a gastroenterology specialist? Either way, it sounds like you need a new doctor!

I know how annoying it is when you can tell a doctor just isn't taking you seriously and isn't listening. Probiotics don't help with anything much, so I'm not sure why a doctor would be recommending them for Crohn's - or are you not diagnosed yet?

I would say though, that coincidences do occasionally happen. I used to get awful episodes of pain and fever, every few weeks or so. Then after about a year of this I never got them again. I was convinced something must have made this happen - my diet, or a medication I took - but ultimately I could find no explanation. The episodes had both started and stopped because of some factor that was invisible to me.

That's my gastro. I'm not diagnosed yet he has said functional ie IBS but has begrudgingly agreed to prove to me it's IBS. Although I've not seen any effort to yet. I really need a nice gastro / do they exist :S

I'm honestly not sure they do exist! I rely on my colorectal surgeon, I don't even see a gastroenterologist any more as I couldn't find one who seemed human! But don't give up - do you have a GP or another doctor who takes you seriously? Maybe a good GP could write to the gastro and tell him something's definitely wrong with you and he needs to find out what.

I've an excellent GP but she's a bit limited. As soon as he took over she refused to go over him which is honourable and annoying. I am a bit stuck to be honest
