My niece has a duagter who is almost 20 months old and she is concerned that she may have IBD. So she asked me if there were different symptoms for babies and how are younger children diagnosed ?? Also any information you have on IBD and younger children would be very helpful :)
Thank you !!

Hi,
My girl is 4 now but has suffered since infancy.

Her main problems at first were constipation and knee pains and belly cramps.

My daughter was 13 at diagnosis, but I think she started as a toddler. She had failure to thrive and malnutrition her entire childhood, but no one looked at this possible source until she was 13. She had chronic diarrhea that improved with a gluten free diet, sensory issues (probably due to malnutrition), seizures (probably exacerbated by malnutrition)... She had a big workup at age 17 months or so, but they didn't scope her. Looking back now I wish that they had... She had rotavirus as a baby and I think that triggered her gene for it...

Lots of children are diagnosed with ileal crohn's disease around the ages 10 and up. One theory is because that's because the peyer's patches in the ileum are active, and they peak around the ages of 16-18, which is where there is a peak in crohn's disease cases. I realy doubt it is merely a coincidence. I don't know anything about babies getting crohn's disease.

My daughter who is 5 now was diagnosed at 2 after having symptoms for about 18 months. Presentation in young children can be very atypical and each child is different, best for your niece to see a GI. Good luck
