I confess I don't read too many "My Story" forums. I've got time until my GI appt so I might as well. :)

I was dxd with IBS when I was 8 yrs old. I started on Strawberry Metamucil (gross! ick! gag!) and quit after a couple weeks.

I had pain off and on over the years. My parents always attributed it to "schoolitis" but it would happen when good stuff was going on too. Holidays, camping trips. Just hours and hours of rythmic abdominal pain either with or without vomiting. Not usually any diarrhea. It's never been one of my big symptoms.

I had my gallbladder out when I was 23. Same kind of pain. I figured that was it.

In 2003 I started having such terrible pains in my stomach when I would eat. For like the first 30 seconds or so. Toe curling, sweat inducing pain. Then as suddenly as it came on, it went away. I was fine.

Finally started with nagging right lower quadrant pain. I felt like crap. Went to the MD and they said "appendiscitis" Yay!! Something they could fix in rapid order! I had 4 kids and had just gone back to work full time. I had lost my nanny and my husband was working for his father and it wasn't going well. LOTS of stress. After my CT I was confronted with my TRUE dx. Crohn's.

I had never ever heard of it. I had no idea what, why, when, how and what next. They dropped it in my lap and left.

Over the next couple months I was hospitalized 2 more times. I begged my GI for a resection. He wouldn't do it.

FF to New Years Day 2004. I took an ambulance ride when the pain landed me on the floor in my living room. I'm very much a stoic. They knew when I agreed to an ambulance I was in trouble. I sat with an undiagnosed perferation until I was delirious with fever, swollen like I was 9 months pregnant and BEGGING for an NG tube (you know you have to be some kind of crazy to ASK for an NG tube!).

Catastrophic perforation with peritonitis so bad the surgeon said I was hours from being dead. Nice. He couldn't close up the incision it was so infected. I required an ileostomy. :( I had to traumatically wean my son at the time. My ex husband was such a horrible horrible partner to me. It was simply the worst time of my life ever.

After I recovered I decided to leave my husband (I didn't until 5 years later..long story) and pulled myself together. I felt SOOOO good after the resection. No gurgling stomach. No PAIN! I was in heaven!!

After my reconnect I never looked back. I've never seen a Dr. I do have to hit the potty about 20-30 mins after I eat most anything. I have more diarrhea than I ever did before. Gurgling is back. Pain..meh..if I do too much I get a "nag" in my side to remind me to slow down.

Just this weekend ended up in the ED with a partial obstruction. Dang scar tissue causing me issue. Luckily got into the GI for today. I'm trying to be a good patient. I'm a nurse. We are the WORST patients! :p I thought about disability for about 2.5 mins. It's so hard to prove and really, it doesn't impact my job THAT much unless I'm sick. Only because my 5 kids are sick enough that I miss enough days as it is!! I myself don't miss too much time but any is too much with children. :)

My phosphorus is like 1.4 which I guess is pretty low. I have a small kidney stone. All related to the Crohn's which I never knew. Paying the price of no follow up I guess.

We will see what the Doc has to say today. I look forward to getting to know you all!!

(Sorry about the typos. Typing fast in the sun with lots of glare and didn't want to download the spell check!!)

Welcome Helena. I hope your appt goes well. So sorry for all that you've been thru.
I'm new to my Dx and keep reading here, it helps me a lot. Weaning off Pred now, and going on Pentasa. Not too bad at this point, and I guess I'm just going with the flow.

Hi Helena,

Wow what a story....I'm a nurse too, just starting out with this IBD nightmare.....dreading the day I have to be a proper patient, you must haver been feeling pretty sh*t to be asking for the NG, I've put a fair few of those puppies down in my time and seeing the relief on peoples faces when they start draining straight away is extremely satisfying, I guess thats where you were!
Always interested to hear from other nurses/doctors on how they cope with being a patient

First off, I love your name :) Second, welcome to the forum, I'm glad you found your way here!

And goodness, you've certainly been through a lot!

I hope they get you in remission soon. Out of curiosity, what symptoms did the low phosphorus cause, if any?

See you around!

*hugs*
