Hi my daughter has an ileostomy and is having an ileoscopy tomorrow at 1pm
I am worried about the preperation she has been asked to take by the IBD nurse. She has to take picolax at 6pm tonight and 6am tomorrow and I am worried about dehydration although they have said she can drink plenty of water up to two hours before the procedure it is the preparation I am worried about.
It would be nice to hear from anyone who has had it done with an ileostomy as this is her first one since having the bag.

Hey Karen, I have not had a bag but had Pico Salax many times. The prep is the right way to take it but she does need to drink water. Everyone feels dehydrated, don't worry it is par to the course of taking the prep. She will be fine. Just make sure after she drinks alot of water and gatorade helps too. Let us know how she does. Get this checked with the stoma nurse if you can.

I DO have a stoma and was told by my surgeon and stoma nurse NOT to take any prep for any scopes if I ever had any. I've never had one, but they suggested other medical professionals needed reminding by the patient as this often happens but I am very surprise an IBD nurse has recommended this. Simply ceasing to eat the night before should be ok. Check this with the stoma nurse if you can. It may be that your daughter has other issues that means she does need the prep.

Dehydration can be a real problem for us with a stoma, especially when it happens quickly. Through a few stomach bugs I have discovered this the hard way. Keep some diarolyte to hand if she does have to take the prep!!

I have a colostomy, not an ileostomy, but I've had a scope and had to take the prep. I took 4 squares of Ex-Lax the night before and only took about a quarter of the prep the next day and that seemed to do the trick. I also stopped eating solid food the day before (I only ate jello or broth). The only problem I had with it was the rush of output once it kicked in. I just eventually positioned myself over the toilet and let it empty into there rather than trying to keep up with emptying my bag.

I didnt take the prep and my scope was perfectly FINE without it. No way take all of that prep!!! Not with an Ileo. With a colostomy a bit of prep is fine. My IBD nurse said no...no...no to prep with an ileo, it dehydrates you too much!

I haven't taken any prep for anything since I had my colon removed several years ago! When I had my jpouch, I would just have to do clears the day before and nothing after midnight....

I agree with the others - double check to make sure it's necessary and not dangerous!!

Hi everything went well and nothing was found they went 100cm and took biopsy so have to wait and hear. My daughter found the procedure very painful through the stoma as they only slightly sedate you and she was sick with the pain, but she is glad it is all over. After the effects wore of I was sent to mcdonalds to fill the gap from fasting.
I would like to feel confident about this result but as she had colostomy first and they detected no crohns in her large bowel, she only had it to relieve the symptoms in her bottom as that was so painful and she was loosing too much weight. This colapsed and she was only going in to have it pulled back out and that is where it all went wrong and asked our permission while she was on the operating table to remove her large bowel other wise have two bags and could be too weak to have the operation at a later date for illeostomy.
I will always live with the guilt but at the time she was under 6 stone and getting more ill by the day and it was like I was watching her dying. Her surgeon said she had ulcers all over her bowel and her bowel was all squashed together which hadn,t shown up in any scans or previous ops he reckons it just sped out of control.
Sorry about writing all this but it scared me to think this could happen again in her small bowel, and I stress whenever she has any symptoms
At the moment all is well with her thank goodness just her bottom leaking which has always been with the fistulas since the first abcess appeared.

Hi Karlea - I can't imagine what it's like for a parent to go thru what you and other Crohn's parents go thru every day. I know it's very painful for my parents and I'm 43 years old!!

I understand why you have guilt, but try not to beat yourself up too hard. You made the best decision you could under the circumstances and hopefully she will be able to have a good quality of life once those darn fistulas clear up!
