Hi there, I'm new!

I was diagnosed with CD in May 2013. For the past three months, I have been in incredible pain, I knew it was a stricture but getting into a doctor took months because I lost my previous insurance and getting reestablished with a doctor has been a nightmare. I went to the ER 4 times in 3 months before they finally did a CT scan and found a bowel obstruction and 2 ft of strictured intestines.

I'm in the hospital now, just had a small bowel resection on Wednesday. I did TPN for a week and the Drs. Tried to rest my bowels, give my flagyl and prednisone hoping that it would calm down, but the GI decided that it wouldn't open up with medication. So I did the surgery and now I think I'm regretting it. I had 7 in of terminal ileum and my appendix removed, and some restructuring of my uterus. But the IC valve was mostly saved!

Anyways, I am 4 days post op and just started having BM's this morning (if that's what you'd call them), Im now at BM #6 i think and they've been only water and dark blood it seems. I've never had blood in my stool before. The Dr that came by earlier told me that it is normal which I figured for after surgery, but now that it's not stopping and it's still just blood no brown, I'm getting worried. A different Dr came by and is much more concerned because I am also on a blood thinner (from a blood clot that I got in my arm from the picc line) and she mentioned blood transfusion so now I'm really getting nervous. I'm waiting now for them to take my blood labs again. Also I just started eating last night and today eating was super crampy and painful, not sure if that's normal.

I'm scared and wishing that I didn't even get the surgery, I hate this disease.

Has anyone else had this much dark blood after a resection surgery?

So sorry you are going through this. I have had a resection, and post op was a bit of an adventure.
Did they stop your blood thinners yet?
If your stricture was bad, you had no choice but to have surgery. Try to be positive, post surgery is always a bit of a rollercoster. Hang in there. Keep us posted.

Hi and welcome.
I'm sorry you're having post-op issues.

Sending you my support.

Some bleeding is normal after surgery, but only your doctors will be able to tell you whether or not yours is. Make sure you stress to every doctor you see what's happening and how concerned you are.

Cramping and pain, especially after eating, are very common after bowel surgery, but again, you'll need doctors to determine whether or not yours is. Have you been advised to start with a soft diet? Your system can be upset if you've not eaten for a while and then eat again. If no one has talked to you about this, you might want to ask a doctor if there are foods you should be avoiding, and which foods are easiest to digest. (I can give you some suggestions, but you should see what your doctors say first.)

Your doctors should also be able to look at your blood test results, observations (blood pressure, temperature, etc.) and see the whole picture. If something isn't right, you're in hospital, so you're in the right place.

I hope your recovery starts going more smoothly from now on.
