Well I am back in the hospital with a big old flare up happening from my UC. totally sucks major pain and lots of blood. My gastro doc wants me to have my colon removed because nothing seems to work that the prednisone and I have just about tried everything. Just don't know what to do I guess think that his prednisone is making my sugar rise and has made my bones thin with osteoporosis my best bet is to have her removed. I would love to here from anybody with a similar story to speak out to me with some good advice and tell me what they ended up doing.

I'm pretty new to this so I can't really advise u sorry.

But from reading on here the amount of people having diseased sections removed etc they feel it's the best thing they ever did after suffering so long.
So good luck whatever happens !

There are several people on here with colostomies. Most have had positive life changes. I personally know one person and he wishes he had done it years earlier. Maybe it's not theend but a bright, new beginning.

It took me 3 weeks to respond to steroids for my big flare, for the last few days there was a surgeon showing a couple times a day.

The surgery seems like it's not an "if", it's a "when". How long have you been in there?

If you've tried all the meds, and it looks as if you have, it may be the best thing you can do. Sorry mate.

However, does everything have to be removed or can you just have a resection?

My advice - GET IT REMOVED!!!! Better to do it before it ruprtures than to have an emergency removal.

Are you a candidate for a j-pouch, if yes, my advice becomes GET IT REMOVED!!!! Seriously, this is a no brainer. Trust me, I have been there. Get that sucker out, have a temp ileostomy, take down and you are back to a normal, med free, pain free, blood free life. I hemmed and hawwed about getting mine removed and ended up with a rupture. Not fun and dangerous!!

If you are not a candidate for the jpouch, you should still consider the ostomy. It really can offer a better quality of life.

I know it's hard to sit in the hospital bed and make a decision to go under the knife. I have been in your exact shoes. It's really, really difficult. But with UC, you have the option to remove the whole disease if you remove the colon. Think about being disease free! And no more bowel prep for scopes! And no colon cancer!

Hang in there - let us know what you decide. Good luck!

Thank you Amy great info still like you said sitting here it is hard to make a descion about getting my colon removal.

Yes, it is very hard. So hard I couldn't make the decsion myself. I ended up having it made for me, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Good luck! I'm rooting for ya!

Yes I would love to be able to make a decision and have it be the correct one in life. But I got the worse luck but this is how I am going to turn the conner here and say no this is going to work I am going to think positive and go in there with the light of Jesus shining from above with all the positive energy I can muster up and for once come out on top. God Bless you all and I pray for you all and thank toy all just he same. Let do this thing.

Welcome to the club. Keep us posted on what is going on. It IS horrible to make the decision, but after about 3 months...you wake up and say...huh? I've got ENERGY...I feel soooo much better! I am doing that now. And I'm only about 70% from having surgery at the end of Dec. (but I'm OLD)

It really isnt the WORST thing in the world to happen...Its just a new beginning.

Well I am in one of the best places I could be trying to get better and all healed up so I can have a flawless j pouch surgery well at least increase my odds for the most sucesss in it. They got me on cyclosporine which for the moment seems to be helping. I thank you all and that is the latest from me.

Glad to hear your update. You sound a little bit more at peace with it now. Best to get healthy as you can before the surgery.

Hang in there and keep up the positive thoughts!!
