Does anyone know the FACTS relating to Infertility and crohn's disease in MEN mainly related to the long term use of 6MP and Imuran (Azathioprine)??? Havn't found any conclusive info online...hope someone can help me out. Also saw it could cause birth defects.

Can these problems be resolved by stopping the medication for a period of time???

As far as I know, there is no affect on male fertility. I also believe that Imuran is unlikely to cause defects as a friend recently went fully to term and had a baby while taking aza.

I'm sure someone will come along to correct me any second though.

I am actually hoping to get pregnant in the near future, I just had this discussion with my doc this last thursday, he said that there has been studies and over time they have found that Imuran does not cause birth defects, he said it would be fine to take if I was comfortable with it.. He said 10 years ago he would of said definitly not safe during pregnancy but enough time has gone by and studies that have proven it to be safe. The safety rating for preg. on it I believe is a catoagory C for preg., my pharmacist did not recomend to be on it during preg. so who really knows for sure, I feel safer not being on it at all if I can get by, but I also don't like to have to take Tylenol if I don't have to either while pregnant.. I am not sure how it effect males though.. I remember reading somewere if you are planning to become pregnant you should wait 3 months after stopping the drug to try to conceive to make sure your body is back to normal and its out of your system.

I stopped the Imuran on my own and became pregnant instantly. I know stopping meds isn't good but I was really depressed and wasn't getting pregnant. Little did I know that my uterus was actually shaped like a heart so that is why I wasn't getting pregnant right away. Both of my kids are perfect even though I had taken the Imuran for years. My doctor said that I would be fine staying on the Imuran while pregnant because you have a greater risk of something being wrong with uncontrolled Crohns then the risk of taking the med. You have to decide what you are comfortable with because it is your body and baby. Good Luck
