My GI has referred me to another specialist to have an Iron Infusion. I am told it takes about 5 hours.

Have others here had an Iron infusion? Is it painful? Any side effects? How often does it need to be done?

Thanks,

Hey iron infusions are straight forward and don't hurt. How often you need them depends on how long your body holds on to it. For some people it's 4-6 months. I was getting them every 6 weeks for 18 months until I had a sub total colectomy and have not needed one since.

All the best.

Kela is right - I had them running over a 3 year period, every 6 to 8 weeks. For me they were about 1.25 - 1.5 hours per unit. Great time to catch up on some reading or napping. Drink some extra fluids the day before to make the veins a little easier to find.

I'm getting an iron infusion on Monday - Ferraheme is amazing, really boosted my ferritin levels 5 months back. Just to caution on the safe side, I always ask for Benadryl through the IV before to ensure there won't be any allergic reactions.

Best of luck!

yeah, they don't hurt, if they do you're having a reaction, extremely rare
