I know I keep asking odd questions on here, but I guess you never lose anything really from asking.

Is it possible to drink coffee with a temporary illeostomy? I haven't drunk it since I got a fistula (intestines to stomach wall) last year and the stoma nurses told me not too because it would fasten my gut up. Is this the case? Is it wise to stay away from it with an illeostomy?

I should say that I drink tea by the bucket load..

Well, if you drink tea by the bucket load and deal well with it, it would be surprising (other than the potential stomach burn issue) that you have problem with the coffee. If you are really someone who enjoys coffee and that it does not trigger you symptoms (try and you will see), then I don't see a why you should necessarily stay away from it. Everything is fine in moderation.

The only thing is that if your output as not thickened so far, coffee will probably not be great regarding this. I can't use myself to compare on that aspect due to the fact I was not drinking coffee yet when I had my ileo at 14 but I do take 1-2 cup daily now. Sometimes I even take it on an empty stomach and I do fine, could not do that with apple juice or cider for instance which my tubes can't handle fast enough if I have not eaten.

I'd say, give it a try and see how it goes :)

I agree with the Psycho up there.. try it out and see. It might cause dehydration from high output because of the caffeine, but that is the only problem I know of that might happen.

Hi Gracifier,
I drink coffee, not quiet by the bucket load, well not most days anyway. It doesn't seen to cause any problems. I think me not drinking it would cause more problems.

I'm not averse to a decaf soy latte.
Makes my bag have a slight coffee odour.
Otherwise - no ill effects to report.
