is it possible to be taken off all medications when you have Crohns?

Hello there, My sister has Crohn's and was recently taken off her medications, she currently is not taking any medications for her Crohn's I was very surprised by this, can this happen? I thought it was essential to have medications, as Crohns is not a curable condition and the mediations are meant to prevent an a flare up by promoting a state of remission? I would apprecite any comments or advice from you guys out there. Thanx.

It depends on the person. If she had mild crohns and it went into remission, they may have decided to take her off meds. It depends on person, what they want, and the doctor treated them. Your sister may have wanted to go med free for awhile.

I'm currently not on any meds, but then again, I had a colostomy in December 2009 (when they removed 1/3 of my colon)...I was actually surprised when I had my colonoscopy in November 2010 and my doctor told me that I had no active Crohn's in my system at all! So, yes, it is possible.

My Uncle has Crohn's and doesn't take any meds for it. According to him, he never really had any symptoms so he must have a mild case (ugh, lucky duck). I think the Crohn's has caused his RA and he might have to start taking Humira. However, no meds for Crohn's.

A friend of mine is on no medication for Crohn's but she also had alot of small and some large colon removed

I have had disease for 15 years and this is the first time in my life Ive been on meds for my disease. I would flare and be put on pain meds and be fine in a few weeks. Last year the disease really came out and Ive been on meds since. I hope one day, I will be off meds again....but in the mean time Ill do what ever I have to do to feel better.

I no longer take any 'crohn's medication' after suffering with CD for over 20 years.(Steroids(Pred),azathioprine,6mp,pentasa).
I am stuck with taking anti-D medication (loperamide) due to the permanent short bowel 2 resections have left me with.
I found 100% remission from CD by taking Serovera AMP.

My wife's birth-mother has Crohn's. She hasn't been on any meds for at least 20 years. Mild case, I guess...

I initially had a mild case and was off all meds for 6 years. My GI put me on a maintenance med a year ago. I flared up a couple months ago and now have a severe case. I wonder if things would've been different had I been on maintenance meds the whole time.

I can go a couple years with no meds (I've had a resection already though) but my inflammation markers will start to go back up after a while. As long as your sister is having regular blood work done and having a colonoscopy done every couple of years, I think she will be ok to be without meds for a while until she flares again (if she does but let's hope she never will again). For me personally though I like to stay on maintenance drugs to keep the Crohn's at bay. After dealing with it for 20 years, I know what works best for me.

My GI categorizes my Crohn's as "severe" and at the moment, I am on no medications. I have failed/been unresponsive to all the meds that are out there for Crohn's, so there is nothing for me to take. I've also participated in drug trials, and although one drug worked for me, it isn't approved for Crohn's yet, so I can't access it (unless I can come up with $120000 every three months). My only option, at this point, is surgery.

CrabbyRelish - Just wanted to agree 100% with above quote.Thankfully i found what is best for me after dealing with it for over 20 years.I then went on to have life changing success. For that i thank god everyday.
