Hello group,

I'm new here, so please bear with me if this has been discussed before. I've seen some comments on the Net that yogurt might be beneficial for Crohn's disease. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, how much should I eat?

Thank you
Chet

Yes, plain yogurt is good for crohns, but taking a probiotic capsule will likely give you even more benefit...I use primadophilus reuteri made by natures way, it's very affective, very affordable and only one/day is needed....you can still eat yogurt if you want but plain yogurt is best, eating a small bowl full should be sufficient but definitely look into probiotic capsules or powder form of probiotic, I highly recommend the one I use (mentioned above).

Hi Chet!

Welcome to the forum and yes, yogurt is good if you can handle it. :)

All the best,
hope to see you around.

Plain Yoghurt is a very nutritious food,a nd it gives you good bacteria. I usually cannot handle probiotics, but can eat yoghurt

I eat about 600grams of yhogurt a day....400g of just plain Balkan Style yhogurt and 200g of Activa (Probiotic based yhogurt), i cant say that it solely makes me feel better, but i believe it helps with everything...hope u have luck

I also drink the Activa, I east the small dannon activia yogurt for breakfast, and take probiotics- made a huge difference for me- I feel 300% better after only 1 1/2 weeks-

i'd recommend having a priobiotic more than just having yogurt because the milk causes problems with some people

Yogurt is yogurt, right? Wellll, not so fast there. Some are high in sugar. most have a high lactose (milk sugar) content.. some are high in fat.. Now, if any of those are trigger foods for your particular case, then they wouldn't be your best choice to eat.

Me? I try to eat yogurt sparingly, just for the probiotics (altho not all are enriched, ie have elevated level of probiotics). I've tried and so far failed to find a yogurt that is low in fat, low in sugar, low in lactose and high in probiotics. but the search goes on

Hi Kev. I think for that you need tp prepare it at home. Get o% fat milk and culture it for 30 hours, so it has no lactose in it. In the SCD diet she metions how to prepare your own yoghurt. I never tried it though. i'm very lazy :)

Hi, I always thought probiotics were for releiving constipation rather than diahorea (i can never spell that damned word lol) or any other crohn's symptoms so can someone explain to me what they actually do and how they're helpful for crohn's symptoms?

Well they kill bad bacteria in ur stomach, and bad bacteria is a hypothesis of how we got crohn's soooo..

I dunno, doesn't matter if it's true or not because when I have it SOMETHING is working

which particular symptoms does it help? I've heard its good for getting rid of bloating but i dont have that too much normally.

I believe that probiotics actually help replace the good bacteria in the GI system. The goal is to help restore the balance between good & bad, and regulate the system. If you want to compare your GI system to an apartment building, then the more of the good guys living there, the less room for the bad. As to whether they actually kill off the bad, that's beyond my understanding of the mechanics of probiotics. If you have been taking any anti biotics, then you should consider adding probiotics to your diet. Either via yogurt, or as a separate supplement.
Antibiotics is an equal opportunity threat. sure, it kills the bad, but also kills the good. And I've heard it said that the bad ones can actually bounce back quicker.
That's about all of the homegrown knowledge I have on the subject. Despite my problems with lactose and fat, I still try to eat yogurt 2 or more times a week, and I take probiotics in capsule form. I do notice more gas, but either good or bad will cause gas.. So if you're going to get it either way, it may as well be for the good.
