I'm with you I have been on it for 3 days now and it has really reduced pain I know it won't last but its nice to have relief. I always save pred for when I really need it, glad to hear that you are feeling better

I avoid prednisone like the plague because of the horrible side effects but I'm so happy it's giving you your life back now. Hope you don't need to stay on it too long.

Thanks guys im on an 8 week cycle and already getting very little sleep but i feel healthy so its which option is best i suppose.

Hi I do love it as it makes u feel great, the side effects are crap. I've not had it for a while now. Just had a small bowel resection so hopefully no pred or any meds. Pred is only best for a little while. Have u been on any more meds Dave? How long u had crohns?

Showing my age but i got crohns in 1987 and have used sulpsalzine asacol asathioprne mercaptopurine Pentasa to try and contol it but non really work so am going on humiria next the pred is just being used while i wait to start.

Well, I second that. If I have to take corticosteroids ever few years for a few weeks, ok, I take that risk, but any more excessive use would really frighten me.

That's the right strategy. Has your doc asked you to stay on azathioprine or will you just be on Humira? Combination theory potentially increases the chance of long term deep remission.

Ive come off aza because it makes me itch all over im taking sulphasalazine at the moment at my own request as it seems to work better than asacol for me.

How long did you take azathioprine? Are you sure it was the reason for the itching? Did you take generics or a brand (in some rare circumstances people had allergic reactions to the non active ingredients in generics). Did our doc discuss 6mp with you as a substitute to aza.

I am asking these questions because immunosuppressives are one of the two major long term treatment options for Crohn's and if at all possible shouldn't be dismissed because of side effects that might not have been related to the actual drug.

Hey there Annimaz85, I know this thread is about prednisolone, but just one comment on your post. You are saying you will not be on any long term meds after a small bowel recection? The normal approach would be to get you on long term Crohn's management meds right after a resection to get you into long term remission and avoid that any inflammation starts at the connection place where bowel has been cut out.

Pred gave me my life back but the side effects have been absolutely awful. I'm so fat and hairy!!!

Yes it got to the stage where i couldnt go out in the sun for more than half an hour without getting itchy skin for a week, after aza the doc tried Pentasa but that did not work for me my inflamation markers went through the roof so we tried mercaptopurine but after two weeks got a call from the hospital saying it was causing liver damage and to stop using it. I went back on sulphasalazine to see if it would control the crohns but it hasnt so next try is Humira. Oh and the sun itch has gone :)

Hi Alex Chris, yeah sorry I made a mistake typing that. I meant that hopefully I won't be on any steroids for a while. I'm on azaphioprine at the moment. I only had my op 5 weeks ago so haven't yet seen my consultant to arrange some long term meds, but yeah ur right would defiantly be the best option to be on something long term to keep it at bay. Or to stay on the aza. So we will see.

Also I only tried azaphioprine before I had to have an op, I've noticed a lot of u on here talking about allsorts of other different medications I haven't tried yet so hopefully they will be able to find one that I can have long term and will keep me in remision.

Agreed, It is a wonderful Drug and I love how it works so fast and makes me feel better than normal, energy buzz, increased weight gain (need it when Im flaring). I was on it for a month recently and best month ive had this year, came off it and still on Humira but feel so crap and going through bad flare.

So tempted to go back on steroids but GI keeps telling me risks are high and its only masking the problem

I presume we're talkin bout prednisone? Yes, it seems 2 work wonders. The longest i was on it was 6 months. I never noticed any side effects. I was always in shape (not anymore tho), & didn't experience any weight gain or others. I just had 2 take some last weekend, as i was out of town. Took 50mg thruout the day i arrived, & had 2 watch what i ate. Made it thru. Weaned off quickly. I know they say you're not supposed 2, but they say alot of things that never happen.

Alex - 60cm!?!?!?!?! That is long! 2ft! My 1st was 6in colon, 6in small - at least that's what they told me. Who knows what actually goes on in that OR - we're out cold. I made it perfectly clear 2 those butchers never 2 take that much again. They claim they didn't, but like i said, we'll never know.
