Joint pain only during a flare?

My DX is Inflammatory Bowel Disease Undeterminate Type. Been DX for 12 yrs. as a child (age 12 when first DX) I had joint pain in my knees mainly and was told I had arthritis at the time. Never really had any problems with further joint pain. I'm currently in what I believe to be a flare and noticed today my elbo hurts really bad and is making a weird creaky noise (I dunno how else to describe it). My question is can joint pain caused by IBD only arise during a flare? I mean is that usually what happens? My legs are cramping pretty bad today which I mentioned to the GI today but aim just kinda wondering if this really is all related. I figured the leg cramps were because of the Pred or dehydration...this the elbow thing started and got me curious!

Crohn's can cause the joints to become inflamed especially during a flare but it can also cause arthritis (an x-ray will show arthritis) and you may be able to see a rheumatoid specialist to help with the arthritis because they know about inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. I'm currently waiting to see if the specialist in town here will accept me because I have arthritis (x-ray showed it in my back and hips and I know its everywhere else too as its degenerative joint disease), they are waiting on blood test results that take up to 3 weeks to process. If you hear and feel a grinding type/vibrating sensation where the pain radiates, that's usually bone against bone and is very painful and feels weird (my fiance used to have that happening in his shoulder but fixed it by having a surgery that shaved some of the bone away, it was a sports related injury) but if its simply pain and an odd noise, it may simply be an arthritic issue.

My arthritis is an equal opportunist, flare or not. Elbows, hands, feet, shoulders...so far. hee hee. My legs cramp up when my sodium levels are way down, I use that as a cue for me to increase my salt intake.
