Journal club?

I have been catching up on my Crohn's reading somewhat, and I keep generating questions that I would love to discuss with others. I thought at first that I could ask my GI, but a 20 minute appt slot doesn't leave a whole lot of time for questions that aren't directly relevant!

So, I was thinking that it would be interesting to start a journal club. In my field this is just a meeting where people get together and discuss a pre-selected article or group of articles. Starting a club on the forum would give us all a place to talk about academic articles that usually only GIs read, ask questions and help each other understand that article better. It seems like we all have different knowledge and experiences that could make the discussion very interesting.

The other advantage would be providing access to articles to those that can only see abstracts. I'm a student, so I have access to all sorts of journal databases. I thought that I would post abstracts of the articles we are going to discuss (maybe for the month) and then those who are interested could let me know and I will PM them a link to download (dropbox or something like that). The reason I wouldn't find a way to put the pdf up is that I'm worried about the copyright laws (will have to mine my lawyer SO's knowledge about this).

What do you all think? Would other forum members be interested in this sort of thing?

Hi Anna,

I would love to gain a better understanding of the articles. I was actually thinking of calling up some old colleagues who are biotech analysts to ask them questions as they have a better understanding of trial results, etc., however, I'm afraid their knowledge may be limited as they are primarily financial analysts who happen to 'cover' biotech companies... So, in answer to your question, I would certainly be interested.

Thanks!

LOL happened to log in and yours was the first post! And, was so coincidental as just minutes before logging in, I was actually thinking of my colleagues and wondering if they would, in fact, be able to give me some explanations, etc.

So, you're post was very timely! :thumleft:

I don't have any diagnosis at the moment, but if I end up having IBD I will certainly want to follow the literature. I'll totally get in on this if that turns out to be the case.

Love this idea. From being in college, I enjoy researching and understanding things. But since I've graduated, I've lost that beloved login for the library website that gave me access to all those journal databases and such. Oh, and I do have a genetic counselor on hand (straight outta medschool) for any extra rediculous questions. :)

In short... I'm in!

yes. I have access to some journal and lots of periodicals (though school and work) if that can help
