Hi all,

I have just been diagnosed with Crohn's on the 11th november 2012. It was the last thing that I would have expected to hear.
My story is that I had not been felling well for at least a year, and had noticed on some occasions blood in my stools along with cramp when passing motions, The doctor done tests on the motions and blood samples and all were clear. At times I felt that I was taking a fever and then it would disapear again, other times I felt like I was taking a cold and then woud never actually get one. I should stress that I did have an Actual flu 26 years previous and never had a cold or flu since in fact never even snezzed in all that time. One thing that seemed to be happening more and more frequent before I was diagnosed was the need to get to a toilet quickly and being very fatigued. Other symthons that were starting to show was itchy shins which I thought at first must have been my washing power or shower gel. I was going hrough buckets of cream just to cool my skin. Lumps also appeared on my arms and itched also, sometimes they would disapear and sometimes not. Then I had what is know as the flareup, for me a first, I was loosing a lot of blood from the rear, as if a tap had been turned on, yet had very little cramp on this occassion all the pain was at the rear. Ended up in hospital and after being taken to surgery to allow the doctors to get a look at what was going on, found out I had Crohn's. Now they are treating it with the usual drugs that I see mentioned through the various web sites (steriods). The drugs made me feel great for the first week or so now I am getting fatigued easy again, I dont know if that is because the drugs are being reduced or related to the fact that for the first couple of weeks I took cravings for Peanuts and ate loads of them along with creamed rice. I dont know if these are good to be eating but I just had to have them. I have also read that Crohn's has normally been diagnosed in people under the age of 40, I am 54. apparently they are now starting to see an increase in people between 50 to 60 who have it. I have still a lot to learn about handling this and it is early days on the medication yet so I am glad I have found these forums and hopefully they will prove a useful knowledge source and help for coping. One thing I keep thinking about at the minute is can a second flare up be as bad as the first?

Hi, welcome to the forum!

Are you taking anything other than the steroids?

Usually, peanuts aren't a great idea during a Crohn's flare. Nuts and corn don't always get fully broken down by your digestive tract and can aggravate your intestines. Do you notice any pain when you eat the peanuts?

To be honest, yes, the second flare can be as bad. If you stick with your treatment, it likely won't be, though. In fact, you may not flare again at all. There's really no way to tell.

I hope everything goes well for you!

Hi Nig, welcome to the forum. We are happy you've decided to join. We are here for questions, venting and support. I do hope your doc finds the right treatment plan for you, speeding your path to feeling better.
Are there any other meds you are taking along with the steroids? Is your pain controlled? Have you written down a list of questions to talk to your dr about? It is important to establish a great relationship with your dr so you can speak freely with them about any new symptoms that may arise. - hugs-

Greetings and welcome to the community :) I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis :(

The itching shins and fatigue makes me wonder about vitamin B12 deficiency. I say that because people with Crohn's Disease are commonly deficient in B12 and those symptoms can result. Have you been tested for it yet? If not, I'd suggest discussing the idea of being tested with your doctor. If you are indeed deficient, proper supplementation can make a HUGE difference in your quality of life.

Again, welcome!

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies. I think the idea to keep a list of questions is a good Idea.
As for the medications that I am on at the moment, they are,
• Prednisolone
• Lansoprazole
• Pentasa
• Vitimin D
• Alendronic acid

SarahBear reference the nuts I do get a slight uncomfortable feeling on my left side of the stomach but it doesn’t last long. So I will stop the nuts and see if that disappears altogether. I am putting weight on again but that may be because of the tablets, so I can’t be sure the weight is not responsible for the uncomfortable feeling.

David reference the vitamin B12 I don’t know if I have been tested for that, I will have to ask the doctor. I know when I was in hospital I was told the bloods referring to the blood tests that was done were ok, but if a test for B12 was part of that I don’t know. As you say this may be a reason for the fatigue and is worth checking out.

One thing that does puzzle me is the Osteoporosis. I was diagnosed with this about 3 + years back after breaking a couple of ribs. I was puzzled at the time because I had always been having plenty of Calcium in my diet intake. Now I wonder was this a symptom of the Crohns developing, or was the Crohns there and was causing the Osteoporosis.

With the crohns, did they find any ulcers? Or is your lansoprazole for GERD? Is this a new addition to your meds?

HI,
lansoprazole was described after the Crohn's was found in the hospital, I dont know if that means there were ulcers or not, I guess it is another question for my list. I have to go for a CT scan in a couple of weeks, I have also been put on a course of tablets to clear thrush up in my throat that is being caused by this also these tablets are called "Fluonazole" and they seems to be working well. I can see my tounge again without a white coating!

In general the Meds seem to be working as they should I think, Yesterday and today were resonable days with less visits to the toilet, still semi soft cement like motions, but slightly better than they were, However I suppose two days is not long enough to judge. I am down form 40mg of steriods to 25mg so I have a way to go yet. I am quite fatigued at the moment so I dont know if that is caused by the reduction in the medication or not. I have to check with my Doctor about this which maybe a lack of B12

One good thing is that I am not running to the toilet just as often durring the niight to pass water. at the start I was going six /seven times a night and felt very dehydrated. The bed would have been soaking with the sweat I was loosing, and had to change the bed clothes most nights, now I am only having to go about three times.

That's great Nig. Sounds like you are responding well so far. Keep it up! I'm glad the fluconazole is working for u. I'm on that and nystatin b/c mine refuses to go away. Also, a probiotic. Have you started one if those yet? Something i would suggest you look into, as it helps us to somewhat try and stabilize our mucosal flora and decrease thrush infections, which you r experiencing. Good luck! Keep us posted. Muah- hugs-

Hi Achellova,

Have already went through 2 courses of oral nystatin, they did not work very well, was with the doctor today and found that the fluconazole had not completly removed it all but it had started to come back again so I have to stay on it for another week, still things are heading inthe right direction.
