I have crohns and have recently been kicked out of college because I had too many missed days
Now I have to pay back my $23, 000 tuition amd have no degree. My doctor said he can write me something up to get a refund. Is it true?!

Did you tell them of your disability at all? They should really take it into account

Were you failing classes due to missing class and that's why they kicked you out? I have never heard of somebody getting kicked out just for not going to class. Could you give us some more info? I hope you can get it all worked out

I'm going to school for cosmetology. It's different than regular college. Attendance is everything in this school. And unfortunately my hour commute both ways doesnt help after a 10 hour day on my feet. I got kicked out because I couldnt always make it to class. Im starting to realize that I picked the wrong career. My school knows of the disease but WILL NOT make an acception. It's frustrating and difficult.

Sorry you are going through this.
I would have thought there would be more support available to you. For example, student accommodation so you do not have that long commute. Obviously I do not know what sort of services your institution provide. But when I was at uni, in the UK, I was able to apply for a disability living allowance (DLA). This meant they could arrange any support I needed related to my disability. They provided me with an en suit room, said they would pay the extra for it, I also got a laptop computer, a lap desk so I could work comfortably in bed if I needed, A printer. A few other things as well.
Is there any services you can access similar to this if you are declared as a disabled student?

I thought this would be discrimination due to disability. Is there any laws to stop this in your area? As long as you have the evidence of when you missed and the reasons why you should have a case to go against their decision.

Thanks for all your replies! I actually was able to get back into school.. And then got kicked again out for low attendance because of having a flare up. I'm thinking about getting a lawyer. I dont think its legal to kick someone out because they have low attendance due to a chronic disease. They know about my issues but wont really help or make an acception. The most help they could give me was to "move closer to the school." Sorry, I dont have the money or budget to do that and even if I did... I would still have Crohn's at the end of the day.

that is wrong on so many levels. you are paying big bucks for professors to teach you and then they treat you like dirt. heck, I'd stop payments on my tuition then and get myself a lawyer if they want to play hardball.

you have my support.

Was the tuition paid through a federal student loan such as a Stafford loan? If so, there appears to be a few ways to possibly get the loan discharged.

Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Discharge

You may be eligible for a TPD Discharge on your federal student loans if you are unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment that
can be expected to result in death,
has lasted for a continuous period of not less than 60 months,
can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 60 months;

If it was some sort of loan through the college, I would suggest contacting the loan department and make sure they are fully aware of your situation. I would also suggest you review whatever contract you have with the school regarding the loan. There may be provisions in the contract itself that could be helpful.

If you have questions, post them. We will try and help as much as possible.

I was comepletey unaware that I could even do that. Yes, all my aid money was federal student loans. How nice of my school to NOT share that info with me. Now I need to get a lawyer so I dont have to pay the remaining balance of the $23,000.

I think it is definitely an avenue to pursue, but like most things governmental, I'm sure there is a lot of red tape and general BS you will have to go through before being able to qualify for the discharge. And then again, they may say you don't qualify for the Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Discharge.

You might spend some time on the website I posted. It looks pretty informative.

Good Luck.
