Who here is Lactose intolerant and when did it happen. At the onset of Crohn's or have you always been allergic to milk products?

Chris

Lactose intolerance is completely different from being allergic to milk products, people who are allergic to milk products are allergic to the casein in milk products, people that are lactose intolerant are intolerant to the natural sugar (lactase) in milk products.

I was lactose intolerant as a baby, but was fine in my toddler yrs and all the way through until I hit 35 yrs old and then became intolerant again...I got sick with crohn's at 23 just before turning 24, so I was sick with CD for a long time before becomming lactose intolerant again, and it sucked because I didn't even realize I had become lactose intolerant since the symptoms of it were easily masked by the symptoms of my crohn's....my GI just happen to test me for it when I was 36 (I'm 41 now) and sure enough, it was discovered that I had a severe lactose intolerance.

I used lactaid products with success, then I discovered a particular probiotic that actually aids with lactose intolerance issues (as well as high cholesterol and for women, vaginal health but it's still fine for men to take this probiotic of course) and shortly after I started using this particular probiotic, I tested it out and found I no longer had to use lactaid products anymore.

Lactose intolerance is pretty common, I think it's estimated that something like 75% of the population is lactose intolerant to some degree (there's mild, moderate and severe degrees), and it is very common for IBDers to have issues with lactose intolerance, too bad IBD wasn't as easy to deal with like lactose intolerance is.

:)

I was curious because my intolerance began right at the onset of my Crohn's/IBS issues and I wondered if there could be a connection.

I gained the same result from eating a lot of yogurt, but in my case it also keeps me in remission w/o taking any meds.

I'm just trying to piece things together as best I can, and try to understand how my body performs compared to everyone else.

Yep, I am intolerant (although not completely allergic) to casein rather than just lactose in milk. It means I cannot have anything containing milk products, including those that are lactose-free. :( Casein allergy/intolerance is rarer than lactose intolerance.

Chris there could be a connection with the onset of your lactose intolerance and your Crohn's. Crohn's is an auto-immune disease after all, and so it's linked to allergies (which are an overdrive in immune response). I have definitely found out I am allergic to more things since my CD has been bad, but I have probably always been intolerant to casein because I can remember having probs with it way back.

My dietician says that when you are malnourished (and in my case underweight), the cillia (?) of the intestines is thought to be extra-sensitive to things too, and this might improve as your nutrition improves.

Hope this helps.

I thought I was lactose intolerant back in the mid-90's to the point I switched to a lactose-free milk. I was also tested and the results were negative. Having said that, often ice cream can upset me but I don't find cheese to be bad. I've stuck with the lactose-free milk over the years to be on the safe side.

I think the extra sugar in ice cream is what affects me. Its funny, Dairy Queen sundaes will turn my stomach but McDonald's will not.

My daugther is kinda like that too, certain "richer/creamier" ice creams will bother her and others won't, I think it might be more the richness (extra fat) that is the culprit in that situation more so than being intolerant or even allergic. Whipping cream will do a number on her but milk is fine and with 1/2&1/2 it's a little touchy as well.

Hello

I am "lactose intolerant" or have a strong sensitivity since the onset of my yet to be diagnosed issues. I also have a lot of other food sensitivities.
I take pro biotics with every meal. They dont really help me with my lactose problem. I have also taken lactaid and I still have issues. Major Bummer. But Im glad the yogurt is working for you. I cant eat yogurt either unfortunately :(
