I was rejected for life insurance due to the surgery back in February and other Crohn's related issues. Has anyone else had issues obtaining life insurance?

I got life insurance way back when I was dx with UC. Haven't tried to increase it or do anything with it since I was re-dx with CD.

Does CD shorten life span????

Keep looking. Good luck! - Amy

yeah im worried about this also, i want to put life insaurance on myself but worried they will say no because of me having crohns

I got life insurance last year, it was a little more than they had first quoted due to the underwriting they had to do for CD. I haven't had surgery directly due to my crohn's though, so that might have helped me get it.
It's through American Income Life.

I don't think CD shortens life span per se... but the incidence of surgery is a lot higher, which increases the chance of death.

I had been told once I could pretty much forget about life insurance. I don't need it right now (my life is not valuable) so I haven't looked in to it at all.

I had life insurance with my last job, but it was automatically given to all employees, so it was just basic. I think I have life insurance through my husband's work right now. Again, it's basic life.

Well, are they thinking our life spans are shortened due to Crohns? Possibly. Do we have a higher incidence of suicide? Possibly? Not that they cover us for that! I havent bothered increasing my life insurance, I wish I would have before diagnosis, now it's too late.

The last time I looked into it was four months and two months after having a course of steroids. Although I had almost 20 years of clear sailing since diagnosis I was declined. In retrospect I should have applied mabe 5 to 10 years after I was diagnosed and things were under control, it may have turned out differently.

I guess insurance companies don't like Crohn's. It's right up there with flying for business in small planes.

I was able to get it but it was more expensive and less of a term than I wanted. I was only able to get 10 yr term. I have not had any surgeries related to crohns.

The situation you are facing is not unusual. Even if you did qualify for life insurance from regular providers, it’s likely you will be asked to pay inflated premiums.

I would suggest you try approaching life insurance carriers that specialize in providing coverage to people like you. There are groups/associations that may be able to help you find fair priced life insurance plans.

However, you have to be prepared to wait for a year before a policy is issued to you if you have had a surgery. An insurance company will also take into account your medical records, treatment history, symptoms, etc. before approving you.

According to CCFC, Crohn's doesn't shorten your life span, but complications can. (cancer, etc.)

On the subject, I got life insurance the day before I got diagnosed with Crohn's, as a gift from my dad. I'm very grateful.
