lifting weights after open ileocolic resection

Surgery was 5 weeks ago, an open procedure (not laparoscopic). I bounced back pretty quickly, am feeling great, healing well, and am fortunate enough to be able to take the full 8 weeks of sick leave before returning to work. My job is fairly physical though - baggage handler, involves a lot of lifting. I want to avoid hernias at all costs. Would a hernia belt be of any use? Anybody have any experience or advice?

Did you ask your surgeon? That's the first person I would ask. My surgeon said I could practice for roller derby after eight weeks, but no contact and no abdominal exercises. Is it possible for you to go back to work light duty until you're fully healed?

I'm glad you're feeling great. Welcome to the forum.

My GI would not even let me drive for 2 months after my surgery. He finally gave me the go ahead to get back in the gym after 6 months but only light work outs. I would ask your doc for sure.

Glad things are working out for you. Keep well.

6 months really? How long does it take the intestines to heal? What could possibly go wrong after 6 months? My surgeon said I can resume normal life after 6 weeks.

No idea how long it takes the intestines to heal. But there were some complications following my surgery due to the amount of bowel removed (80 cm). I was also extremely emaciated having lost just over 20 kg in weight. And then shortly after surgery I had a pulmonary embolism.

So it might be a special individualized scenario. I hope I don't have to wait that long to resume exercise. I'll ask my surgeon.

Now I have to ask, what does the ileocolic mean? Same thing as ileocecal? I'm getting an ileocecal resection, so my terminal ileum, appendix and part of my colon will be removed.
